there is absolutely nothing facebook could do to bring me back to their platform. I quit in 2017, don't regret it at all.

Greater privacy on Facebook sounds great, but literally none of the changes they have announced actually increases privacy for the users. Hell, one of the "privacy features" they announced is just giving Facebook more information about you (the secret crush feature).

 

Be very careful when you listen to what Mark says. His definition of words are not the same as the dictionary definition. For example in the email talked about in this article, he indirectly says that he does not believe giving developers access to private information on users if they buy a certain amount of ad space on Facebook is classified as "selling user data", because he tacks access to user data on as a perk rather than what is being directly "sold".

Facebook has on several occasions been found to do things such as collect data which users has not agreed to share. Examples of this has been the Facebook third party SDKs. If an app has a "login to Facebook" option, then chances are that app shares data about you with Facebook, even if you yourself never agreed to any EULA or even has a Facebook account. In some apps this even extends to data inside the app. For example several period tracking apps were found to send data about when their users is on their periods back to Facebook, and the developer of the app had no idea it even happened.

 

Also, EULAs and ToS do not override laws. It does not matter what they put in the EULA if it breaks the law. They can't put "we're allowed to sell you as a slave if we want to" and then actually do it because "you agreed to it".

 

And no, "it's not Facebook's fault you agreed to it" is not a valid excuse either. That's just a way to defend shitty behavior. If I do something bad and take advantage of people, I can't just go "well those people should have been smarter. I am not a bad person for taking advantage of them". I am still a shitty person if I for example scam someone of their money, or trick them into doing something they were not aware of.

If Coca Cola started adding arsenic into their drinks, killing thousands of people, would you just go "well, all those people who died only have themselves to blame. Coke did no wrong. People should have read the ingredients, then they would have known drinking this would have instantly killed them."?

The only way Facebook would go for real privacy is if they felt like they could not make any money with user data anymore. A "private" Facebook is a Facebook if it stays free that does not make any money.
