BOINC Pentathlon 2019

Go to solution Solved by jakkuh_t,

Seems like the easiest way for most people to help out is in the Marathon.

This involves downloading BOINC, selecting the "World Community Grid" project, and then selecting the sub-project "OpenZIKA".

1. Download + Install BOINC (https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php

2. Open BOINC and click "Add Project"

3. Select the "World Community Grid" project, and then click on their website url. (https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/discover.action)

4. On their Website, click "Join Now" at the top left or right depending. Enter your information and Register.

5. Once presented with the Sub project selection, choose "OpenZIKA" and click next. It will download a program, but you don't need it.

6. Go back to the BOINC app and click "Next >". Login with the World Community Grid account that you just signed up for.

Your BOINC app will now benchmark your system, and then start running.

BUT, you still need to set your team to the LTT forum one.

7. Navigate to the team selection page, and login if you aren't already (https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/team/viewMyTeam.do)

8. Type in "LinusTechTips" in the "Contains:" field.

9. Click on the "LinusTechTips_Team" result that shows up. Once the page loads click "Join Team".

You will now be BOINCing for the LTT team :D

This is the easiest way to help out the cause, but there are more beneficial / advanced ways to do so if you're interested. Refer to the OP for more information.

Would be more accurate to say don't know, forum is very much 'official unofficial' than something LTT actually uses for community events and engagement. It's probably a job role they need to hire, as well as a stylist ?.

Without a dedicated community resource they won't have any idea what is going on, too busy doing other work.

I doubt Luke or Riley knew though, not that half the stuff that is supposed to be covered on WAN show does lol.

Also not 'my event' ?

I don't fully understand your question but to elaborate I got the bronze badge for folding on the WCG website. I agree that I'm probably mistaking what the prerequisites are for badges on the forum.

While poking through the (web) settings there was a task limit option that can be set as number of tasks or % of CPU. Maybe that's set to limit? Can be found on the website of a project. Think boinc uses the last project settings you edit, as they are global but on every project page.

For local settings I set % of CPU time to 100 but if the website specified a maximum of concurrent tasks I'll try to find it and see if it says 32 and if that can be edited higher.

2x 2670v1's (8C/16T each)

2x 2698v3's (16C/32T each)

And a 5960X but it's not running 24/7.

I've just poured everything into OpenZika. It's the only project I'm running.

Lol, I didn't even get to watch myself earn Silver I'm already at Gold. It's only been like 2 going on 3 days of folding.

Nope, Folding@home runs in its own client and infrastructure, ran by standford university and the pande group.

BOINC, Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing. ran by Berkeley and host many different projects.

I do think Folding at home used to run on BOINC long ago, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

Its under World Community Grid, then you have to go to the WCG website and choose OpenZIKA.

no need to reinstall, just add the project, on the advanced view of BOINC just go to 'tools' then 'add project'.

after that select WCG, make an account and then go to the website and select OpenZIKA only.

Im not sure what i did wrong but when i signed up it installed the WCG boinc manager over top of my standard boinc manager.  It retained all settings and looks exactly the same.  It just says World Community Grid instead of BOINC.  I did not have to do that on my second machine because i used BAM sync to set up the project automatically .

WCG do have their own forked client that performs basically the same. As long as you are crunching for team LinusTechTips_Team and crushing ZIKA it should be fine.
