BOINC Pentathlon 2019

Go to solution Solved by jakkuh_t,

Seems like the easiest way for most people to help out is in the Marathon.

This involves downloading BOINC, selecting the "World Community Grid" project, and then selecting the sub-project "OpenZIKA".

1. Download + Install BOINC (https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php

2. Open BOINC and click "Add Project"

3. Select the "World Community Grid" project, and then click on their website url. (https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/discover.action)

4. On their Website, click "Join Now" at the top left or right depending. Enter your information and Register.

5. Once presented with the Sub project selection, choose "OpenZIKA" and click next. It will download a program, but you don't need it.

6. Go back to the BOINC app and click "Next >". Login with the World Community Grid account that you just signed up for.

Your BOINC app will now benchmark your system, and then start running.

BUT, you still need to set your team to the LTT forum one.

7. Navigate to the team selection page, and login if you aren't already (https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/team/viewMyTeam.do)

8. Type in "LinusTechTips" in the "Contains:" field.

9. Click on the "LinusTechTips_Team" result that shows up. Once the page loads click "Join Team".

You will now be BOINCing for the LTT team :D

This is the easiest way to help out the cause, but there are more beneficial / advanced ways to do so if you're interested. Refer to the OP for more information.

Eeeh, that does take a lot of the fun of it. Building them is the best part. Do any of the servers have GPUs? Plan to include them?

No almost none of our servers have GPUs in them. Only our VDI servers and none of them have been decommissioned. All the stuff we run is corporate IT software etc so our servers are either 2x E5-2690vX/Xeon Gold or 2x E5-2667vX (though only very few of these as they are for a single application).

There's about 6 DL560s but only dual CPU configuration not quad but use the E5-4xxx, those were for SQL clusters. Only 2 been decommissioned and I have other actual plans for those. There's also 2 DL580 with 4x E7-8890v4 not being used but those also have a planned usage.

Of the 6 I'm going to be using for this, all the E5-2667 ones, there is another roughly 10 or 12 DL380s mostly with the E5-2690v1 in them. In about 2 months time 30 ish DL360 2x E5-2690v4 will be coming out of production so I'll throw out the oldest DL380s and keep all those DL360s.

As long as these events are CPU focused I can contribute very well, GPU only my 2 290Xs.

@leadeater Just take over all the servers in the office. Tell them you're just borrowing them for two weeks.

The Ubuntu 2x 2670's server is up. Had to install Ubuntu on an SSD it couldn't find the BOINC packages when just Trying Ubuntu from USB.

So far it's actually crunching faster than the 2x 2698V3's (per core performance) looking at about 1.5~1.75hrs instead of an average of 2hrs. Half as many cores though and this is a highly parallel workload so the 2698V3's still come out ahead.

Temps are acceptable (60°C & 71°C on the CPU's without having to fiddle with much. I have a 3x Noctua NF-F12 iPPC 3000RPM fan wall in the 4U enclosure so I rampped them up to full tilt and it's working a treat. Noisy though.

It is doing something a little weird. Unlike on Windows BOINC isn't downloading work to do after it completes the first 32WU's so I can't really do the throttling thing under Network & Daily Schedule because it won't benefit much from it. I removed the "Use no more than X GB" restriction but it's still not downloading future work. I'm gonna let it fold and see if that changes on it's own but otherwise I may just let this go without the bunkering.

2 servers up and running so far, not sure how to limit network bandwidth via cli only usage yet, maybe if I can get a boinc manager to connect to them I can do it using that???

Time to spin some more up, worst comes to worst they'll be contributing points but no bunker boost.

You can configure all of them for remote managing with a boinc manager for another computer.

I don't have anything that is allowed to talk to them, I'll maybe Windows one of them just for that. Isn't it a bit late/pointless now since the start date is so close?

A few machines restarted overnight thanks to Windows Update. I had been lazy when setting up my internet connection upgrade and hadn't re-enabled the firewall block, which I have done now.

Weather looks mild enough I think I'll start with around 6 systems or so. Exact mix not decided yet, but will include 6700k, 2683v3, 1700, 2600, and a part time 8086k from my gaming system. For the other two, I'm thinking 5930k and 7800X but not 100% on that.

Main system: i9-7980XE, Asus X299 TUF mark 2, Noctua D15, Corsair Vengeance Pro 3200 3x 16GB 2R, RTX 3070, NZXT E850, GameMax Abyss, Samsung 980 Pro 2TB, Acer Predator XB241YU 24" 1440p 144Hz G-Sync + HP LP2475w 24" 1200p 60Hz wide gamut

I just bought a cheap tower cooler to tie me over, planning to refill the AIO after some more research.

Saying the WUs are taking 10-15 mins... Does that seem right?

On my 5930k I've units ranging from 6 minutes to 3 hours. But my 6700k next to me is consistently estimating just over an hour or so, on xeon they're all hours in length. I'd assume they are variable length.

Thanks,

I'm getting annoyed atm cause WCG isn't spitting out a bunch of WUs for my x99 rig even though the settings are the same as my main rig.

Looking at project options now...

For yoyo (5 days) there are a whole bunch of subprojects that may be selected. I have no idea what differences there are between them, but I got an EMC unit on my 5930k, and it is using just under 8GB of ram. got a siever unit on another system, that doesn't look particularly stressful.

For NFS (1 day) there are 4 subprojects. I have the first two selected, but don't know if that is default or if I changed it in the past. The first two state they use less than 0.5GB of ram, the two non-selected ones use up to 1GB each.

Are we going to attempt the 1 day javelin with NFS?

Also I'm thinking I should set my WCG boinc priority to 0 and leave it enabled even when doing other projects. That means, if there is no other work then it will be used as backup project.

It took overnight but the Ubuntu server is finally bunkering jobs. It seems to be able to hold 200 WU's at a time but it's not going to have them done within the 9 hour deadline. I'll see what it gets done. I estimate I'll have 300WU's to contribute out of the gate.

I got lucky it'll only be 8:00PM for me (EST).

I say we just disregard javelin,

We don't have the numbers to compete in every event, may as well pour what we can into 2-3 of the events as the point system is weighted.

I say marathon, city run and whatever GPU projects come up.

Been poking around WCG options while I set its priority to 0. There's also two settings for cores in use, either as number or %. Apparently it will limit it to the lower of the two set. Again I don't know if default or something I set in the distant past, but I had 8 core limit set, which I have now increased. This may impact higher core count systems.

Actually, I don't think my 14 core system had any difficulty getting more than 8 units even before I touched this setting...

I have a problem. My server keeps getting told there's no tasks available for OpenZika then I get the Status "Communication deferred 00:02:00"

Have I done something wrong? Is this normal?

Edit:

Nevermind more work showed up. I don't know why it lagged for so long.

@Windows7ge @porina @Ben Quigley @Ithanul

Is there a way to track event progress to see how well we are doing compared to other teams? Like if it's close enough I want to know if I should start up more servers.

Edit:

NVM found it, really obvious too lol.

Maybe. The thought came to mind.

Now I have a new issue. BOINC is only using 32 of my 64 thread server. I'm wondering if there's a soft limit of 32 concurrent tasks. It does appear to be using both CPU's but it's only using any 32 threads at random. I wonder if there's a workaround for that.

In the meantime I earned the Bronze badge for folding ? and I'm 3/4ths to Silver. How does one acquire badges on the forum? I've heard you have to ask admin's like colonel_mortis but what are some of the actual requirements to earn them? I think I've been a member long enough it's time to earn some badges.
