BOINC Pentathlon 2019

Go to solution Solved by jakkuh_t,

Seems like the easiest way for most people to help out is in the Marathon.

This involves downloading BOINC, selecting the "World Community Grid" project, and then selecting the sub-project "OpenZIKA".

1. Download + Install BOINC (https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php

2. Open BOINC and click "Add Project"

3. Select the "World Community Grid" project, and then click on their website url. (https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/discover.action)

4. On their Website, click "Join Now" at the top left or right depending. Enter your information and Register.

5. Once presented with the Sub project selection, choose "OpenZIKA" and click next. It will download a program, but you don't need it.

6. Go back to the BOINC app and click "Next >". Login with the World Community Grid account that you just signed up for.

Your BOINC app will now benchmark your system, and then start running.

BUT, you still need to set your team to the LTT forum one.

7. Navigate to the team selection page, and login if you aren't already (https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/team/viewMyTeam.do)

8. Type in "LinusTechTips" in the "Contains:" field.

9. Click on the "LinusTechTips_Team" result that shows up. Once the page loads click "Join Team".

You will now be BOINCing for the LTT team :D

This is the easiest way to help out the cause, but there are more beneficial / advanced ways to do so if you're interested. Refer to the OP for more information.

I hope the seller ships tomorrow still need a psu possibly thermal paste for it assuming my P4 psu won't work.

I'm guessing you are asking about my cpu? If so it was a one click BIOS option which I guess MSI auto tunes the settings for the best/stable options. Sadly no 4.2+ but at least it isn't causing issues and it's allowing me to fold w/o issues or loss in BOINC (in fact I would say it's a little faster now as well).

I haven't tried overclocking in a long time. I've never had a workload that would benefit from it.

Well, I do now but I don't know if the downtime to do the tuning would be worth the amount of time it'd take to catch back up.

Boinc is currently only doing NFS is that ok? in my settings it is to swap projects every 120 minutes but I would have expected it to have at least finished them first, unless there are settings I'm missing. The program couldn't let WCG finish the 5 minute item?

BOINC is stupid. There's no other way to put it. The creators tried to make it as general as possible but resulted in a mess for short term configuration. It does, kinda, work out in the long term. I set the "switch projects" time setting to something high so it will hopefully finish units and let unit grabbing do the balancing.

Does boosting CPU frequency do any good for this or would it be a waste? I currently have mine with a 200mhz increase should be able to push the 6600K to 4.2 w/o stability issues

I haven't tested these projects but in general it does unless you hit some other limit like ram bandwidth.

Holy moly.....OpenZika loves my 1900X under Mint Mate.

:I  Darn thing reporting an estimate 40min run time per OpenZika WU.  Crap, I need to temp load a Linux distro onto the 1950X then.

Unit sizes vary. Nice if it remains that way...

At this point I'd just stick with what you know works.

Just to check for those running WCG, make sure to set the work to OpenZika only on the website.

For yoyo, I'm seeing some subprojects give large (long duration) units. I've deselected Cruncher OGR and ECM to prevent getting those. Could give more agility when switching projects near the end of the section.

Should I put a server or 2 over on Javelin or City Run instead?

We don't have any co-ordination for Javelin so maybe best to concentrate on city run instead. I threw some units on Javelin just so that we're not at zero.

Move a 2x 2630v2 server over to yoyo. Might be around 5k/hour.

Right now have my 1950X and 1900X on yoyo.  Probably will put the 1900X back to WCG this afternoon.

Hopefully I can get the 5960X up and running here soon.  Just have to nab a bit of RAM off my Xeon to get the 5960X and find an air cooler to temp on to it.  I can maybe get the old FX chip up as well.  Just depends if my router has enough ports at this rate (I really need to get a better switch and router setup for the house).

Just to check, are those OGR tasks 17 days ETA? Am I reading that correctly? Hell no if that's the case.

I didn't see any that long but it was like 10+ hours. Boinc estimates can be pretty bad. Are the units actually running and showing that?

I haven't done OGR on yoy, but have done them as part of distributed.net in the distant past. If they behave similarly, they're variable length and not possible to predict accurately. Having said that, the max length shouldn't be silly.

???

I think the longest ones I may get on occasions is maybe an eight hour one.  Most I get are maybe three or four hour lengths.

About the only way I see ones take that long is if I throw them at the i3 in my lappy.

Another 16 cores active. That wasn't fun to get working. 1st attempt (headless) I could hear it boot but couldn't connect over network. Put a monitor on it, found it at desktop, but no network. Bad cable... ok, switched it for another one, and Windows gave me the firewall screen. Argh! Dig out mouse to click it. Are we there yet? I did some updates and rebooted. Couldn't connect again. Frozen on boot. Sometimes happens, no idea why. Reboot... Windows defaults to going into boot repair. Find keyboard so I can move it to "start normally". Finally we're back in action.

Half debating if I should replace Win7 with Win10 on it, but it uses really crappy graphics since it is a server and not sure how Win10 would cope with that. I might try it after the penthalon.
