Intel Hires a "key" Nvidia Engineer

The news comes from Gamers Nexus. Basically, Tom Petersen from Nvidia was hired by Intel according to Steve's sources. Petersen is described by Steve as being:

Someone who, to our knowledge, a direct rapport to Jensen, or extremely close if not. So that's a big move, that's a power play by Intel

 

Furthermore Tom, again according to Steve, was pretty involved with the following:

 

Overclocking, boost algorithm, building benchmarking software, FCAT, VR Benchmarking software and building it, and did engineering work on clock behavior for Nvidia GPU's.

 

Opinion:

Jesus, Intel has deep pockets, but what's more than that, they're really fixated on making their long term GPU goals come true. If it means poaching from both of their competitors, then I guess so be it? It's a pretty cut throat business I guess. I'm not sure what to expect at this point. Having Raja, Petersen and so many other talented engineers has a cumulative effect, wonder what they could do with their talents combined.

 

Maybe we shouldn't underestimate the potential of future Intel GPU's after all?

Intel really should have bought Nvidia around 2014/15. Late Obama Admin probably would have approved it.  Wonder how much it actually would have gone for in 2013. Would have been a lot better than McAfee, Altera and MobilEye combined. (Granted, both MobilEye and McAfee look like they were more of a payout to certain networked investors or international players. Historically, this is something that Defense Contractors have done as the "encouragement" of their national governments.)

Jensen probably told Tom to go there to make Intel a worthy competitor because AMD ain't gonna cut it anymore. 

He probably related to GSYNC development as well, judging by some of his patents regarding VRR.

As much as I don't like intel's monopolistic pricing in CPU space…AMD hopefully has something to go at them there with the latest gen Ryzen, to bring about actual competition in pricing again.  With graphics, Intel being the late ones to the game, are entering a space that already has competition, so hopefully their pricing and performance are actually going to change things, regardless of how good they end up being.

 

I think intel has been getting better much more drastically with their on board graphics than others, but of course it is still a fledgling compared to either nv or amd.  However, they've now had time to work on things like driver issues, compatibility, etc so maybe the software support side won't suck with the new offering.

 

Slightly longer term though…GPUs have been the computer power that people want for enterprise AI/deep learning/etc as well.  AMD with their upcoming release CAN package both the CPU cores and the GPU cores on the same chip package.  Intel has already been doing this, but with lower performance GPU…but if the rumors of the new graphics cards are true, they will then have that ability in a generation or two as well.  Those are power plays for cloud computing.  Gaming is an afterthought of a way to make some money during development of getting there.

 

Honestly, the joke above about an arm system with nv graphics seems not that unlikely in the future, as arm based chips have continued to grow in ability more rapidly than existing x86 style chips.  More importantly though, nv would be the only graphics company without a cpu as well, which would put them at a huge disadvantage, even in consumer space, if a few cores worth of chip space were given to good graphics processing instead of just existing intel/oldvega integrated.  All of a sudden, every chip ships with good enough graphics that only high end 3d/vr type machines would consider buying a separate card, and then nv is screwed.

I would also point out that intel has always been trying to poach top talent, much as google, apple, etc do as well.  All of them have hired several key people from each other within the past year.  While these stories are noteworthy to help show where a company is putting more focus currently, it really is just more business as usual for them all.
