F Intel CPUs, no tray price reduction on upcoming GPU-less parts

porina
Quote

We recently reported on the fact that a range of new mainstream Intel desktop processors are coming onto the market without the integrated graphics enabled. This processors, indicated by the ‘F’ designation (not to be confused with Intel’s chips with an integrated fabric, also called ‘F’), have had their specifications released for a short while, except for the price. Intel is now happy to fill that part in.

https://www.anandtech.com/show/13865/intels-graphics-free-chips-are-also-savings-free-same-price-fewer-features

I can't quote the table in an easy way, but there's not much to see. The "F" suffix parts are the same spec, same price, same everything apart from not having the GPU enabled.

Quote

The on-shelf price of the processor in a retail box, with or without a cooler, is not listed by Intel. The company leaves it up to distributors and then retailers to determine the market value of such a product. This is why the Intel Core i9-9900K, the current flagship of Intel’s 9th Gen Core desktop processor line, has a ‘tray’ price of $488, but actually came to market on Amazon at $582.50, before settling at its current price of $529.

It doesn't necessarily mean the pricing will be the same once they hit retail. It is up to resellers to decide how to price to balance their profit and still be competitive against others selling the same. They don't necessarily pay the indicative tray price either and may get volume discounts.

So in part, it is a bit disappointing that Intel lists the F CPUs at the same price as the GPU enabled parts, but we will have to wait and see if there is a price difference once they hit availability. Still, any increase in supply of consumer parts may help to temper some of the price increases seen due to shortages.

Spoiler

Welp, no point in buying these then. May as well pay the same amount and have a free iGPU

I expect them to be maybe 10USD cheaper at retail. For any of the upper SKUs, it'll be the same, but for the 9400F, I'd expect at least a little discount because those purchasers will probably favor having an iGPU.

No, they are simply disabling the iGPU as its faulty. Hence the same price, because Intel thinks that's a thing that goes down well (hint for them: it doesn't). Imagine if an RTX 2070 had the same RRP as a 2080, and you get the idea.

On the one hand, I'm more than happy to see Intel not having to deal with the waste of a disabled faulty GPU making a CPU no good, but on the other hand, a lack of price difference will not incentivise people to take advantage of this new chip stock.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

It is an honor and a privilege to be able to purchase Intel parts. Don't you ever forget that.

Reducing the price is just something poor people expect. Go buy your little AMD processor if you want that.

Agreed - this makes zero sense other than to pretend to have a HUGE portfolio of competitive chips on the market.

Kind of disappointing that they are not discounting the F-series by at least $10 to $20...  If they are truly doing this because the iGPU has issues and it allows them to still use the silicon, I would be suspicious of other silicon defects. I'm trying to remember, but I thought there were some actual use cases where you could shuffle some of the encoding off to the iGPU for things like streaming and still keep performance up in other applications.  As it is, selling for the same price seems to set up the F-series to mean Fail...

Yup, Im thinking of how I help people here and most of them do NOT have a second GPU or a second PC or whatnot - just going to make it harder to diagnose over the interwebs as well.  And you are talking about 90% of the rest of the PC population, and they wont even be AWARE it doesn't have an iGPU until its to late lol.  However those folks will likely buy a pre-built :)

it's like there is no point to not having an iGPU. no matter how basic it is. if it's powerful enough to load Windows, open a file explorer and backup files it's good enough.

this has been one of my main complaints about ryzen.

No you have a point - when I bought my R7 1700 I did NOT do any research on the iGPU/lack of.  However, enthusiast, had a card waiting for it and extras in the pile so not as detrimental and wasn't PLANNING on using the iGPU but I was surprised and a bit disappointed.

I truly think it comes down to being able to have a "larger" current CPU portfolio, pretending its different when its not at all, just less for the same price.  To someone who just wants to buy shares and doesn't UNDERSTAND CPU's - this portfolio matters.  My opinion.

It's the loss of utility for the same price that many will find annoying. And worrying, though Intel will keep the iGPU in their designs. The majority of their products never get dGPUs, so they design for the iGPU.

Honestly though, Intel should have been selling these into Retail at the end of product cycles for a long time, especially when we know 14nm yields aren't great. There's a reason why Intel has a lot of these.

I can't quote the table in an easy way, but there's not much to see. The "F" suffix parts are the same spec, same price, same everything apart from not having the GPU enabled.

So basically, what AMD did with ryzen but for no reason and with no price incentive? K bet. Yeah let me just buy a CPU with defective silicon whatever the fuck at the same price as a non defective CPU...Where did Intel get this business model soulja boy?

Not even; AMD never had an iGPU for the non-G SKUs. It's not like Intel removed the iGPU for slightly better thermal perf or whatever, no here Intel is just blatantly trying to sell partially defective products at full price.

it's like there is no point to not having an iGPU. no matter how basic it is. if it's powerful enough to load Windows, open a file explorer and backup files it's good enough.

this has been one of my main complaints about ryzen.

EDIT: i know ryzen APU's exist.

Even my ancient PCX 5750 is good enough for that under Windows 10...let alone my spare 650ti and HD7970
