3600X. While it wouldn't be an upgrade over my 2700X, it'd still be a killer performer, I reckon. 12c is kinda overkill.

Yeah, depends on use case... if gaming 12 cores would be overkill considering the 3600X can possibly do 3.8 or more if overclock headroom is there. For me the more cores the better for production and VMs.

I'd go all out and get the 3800x 16c/32t. And if it's actually $500, it's an amazing deal.

 

I might also buy a 3300x for a pfSense router (even though it's pretty overkill) if pricing is good.

For me it'd be between the 3600X and the 3700.
The 3600x has a higher clock while the 3700 has more cores. Both are likely overclockable to similar clocks, so if the 3700 isn't that much more expensive(like less than $50 difference), I'd take that one.
 
Of course, benchmarks come first.

Yes, that is amazing value if they can get it at $500 or close to. For a pfsense I think they 3300X would be massive overkill, I expect it to be around £120-ish, you'd be better off maybe with a £50 AMD CPU with 2 cores/4 threads. and low TDP, but I guess if £50-70 isn't that big of a deal the 3300X  would be fine.

Yes, definitely... nobody wants another disaster on their hands like the gen before Ryzen, can't think of their name right now? - I guess disaster is too strong of a word, as many still like it, but compared to Ryzen it WAS I guess.

Always better to wait for benchmarks unless timing is a factor maybe and stock is low.

none, I7 4790K is still stonk ;)

 

if i had to pick one id probably go for the 3800X because if im upgrading im not doing it for just a little bit of extra performance, im going all the way to the best

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

FX is what you are thinking about. FX was a hot mess with shared cache between cores which made it have horible IPC

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

It depends on pricing, but 3800X would give interesting Cinebench scores and should be fun to OC. Otherwise I'd go right to the other end of the spectrum with a 3300, as it would be least crippled by ram bandwidth shortages in real work. I'd actually prefer a quad core if still limited to dual channel ram but it has to be Zen2 not Zen+ for the FPU upgrade.

Single thread perofrmance is goign to be key with AMD CPU's.

 

They need to compete with intel, or atleast get close. as such i vote the 3700X. It has the highest stock boost clock and thus 'should' overclock the best and have the best single thread performance.

 

If a cheaper lower core count CPU ends up doing better i would go with that. Single thread performance is most important imo.

I suspect you mis-typed and mean 3700\X?

 

If gaming, then ATM yes highest clockspeed/single thread performance is key... ATM is the key word, as I suspect that soon devs will be able to spread the load across cores better and that MIGHT become the next factor.

If gaming, then ATM yes highest clockspeed/single thread performance is key... ATM is the key word, as I suspect that soon devs will be able to spread the load across cores better and that MIGHT become the next factor.

People have been saying that same thing for years, and yet game dev's have been slow to optimise games more for multi thread, mainly due to APi limitations. So while it would be very nice to see game become much more multi core optimised, i doubt its happening anytime soon, and if it does then thats great , would mean i dont need to upgrade my CPU :P    not that i need to yet, 6c/12t 3930k at 4.6 is doing fine, and if need be i can likely hit 5ghz in the future.

 

Would be nice to make a new build though, perhaps a fully AMD one with a top perfoming AMD 3000 CPU and a top end Navi GPU ...though im less convinced AMD is going to perform at the top end with GPU's any time soon.

They need to compete with intel, or atleast get close. as such i vote the 3700X. It has the highest stock boost clock and thus 'should' overclock the best and have the best single thread performance.

 

If a cheaper lower core count CPU ends up doing better i would go with that. Single thread performance is most important imo.

given how Ryzen has performed so far in overclocking id expect all of these chips to reach similar overclocking results, thats what makes me chose the 3800X over the 3700X. More fast threads > fewer just as fast threads. I have plently of cooling for it too with my custom loop

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...
