Considering today's market, is a Ps4 Pro a better buy for gaming than a pc?

Hello, how are you? 

Today, thanks to miners, low supply, vram shortage, a 1060 or rx580 cost more than a Ps4 Pro. 

If you already have a TV, the ps4 pro and the bundled controller is all you need to enjoy games. 

I know you have to play most games at 30fps, but you also get to play the exclusives. 

And you don't have to be constantly reading forums and just thinking about what to buy or upgrade next. 

So I was thinking that now, due mainly to the gpu and memory market conditions, the ps4 is looking better as a gaming alternative. 

What are your thoughts?

the ps4 is worth it just for the exclusives. both games that are already out and ones releasing soon 

 

personally the ps4 pro is worth it if you have a 4k (HDR) tv. Sony can't guarantee that devs will prioritize 60fps mode

a 1050Ti can play any modern game

Games are the same price on console as PC and they play better on PC cause most console games are sh*tty ports from the PC version

You could always just buy the main parts and get a 1050ti, then upgrade once the prices are back to normal.

You might find yourself being able to afford something better once the prices go back to normal. (Assuming you can save a little extra)

Still, lots of sources say that even if prices come down, they probably won’t return to Normal this year at least.

we are stuck with 1070ti for 600euros and used 980ti for more than 450 euros.

and a ps4 cost 220 or 350 if it’s a pro.

 

i don’t know, but for me, this whole spectre and meltdown issues, plus the performance degradation patches, plus these whole mining prices, is really affecting pc gaming and its appeal.

You should take into account things like the extended catalogue of pc and things like the steam sales (far better than the ps store sales and also non-reliant of having the ps plus to enjoy all sales)

 

Having to pay for the psplus is a deal breaker, the free games each month are not really free and are usually crap. Get yourself a pc for the bulk of the games and then a ps4/switch to play the exclusives.

To be fair, PS4 games go on sale all the time, just like PC Games - just that the sales usually aren't as aggressive as Steam Sales. However, PSN subscriptions give you free games, and further discounts on sales.

Erm, for most cross platform games, you've got that backwards. Most developers tend to start with the console version, and then port to PC. Not all of course - there are examples of both.

 

 

Personally I wouldn't buy a PS4 Pro, but that's because I dislike the PlayStation controller layout. If I were to buy a console for gaming, it would hands down be an Xbox One X (Project Scorpio). I already have a One S, which I use for Xbox Exclusives (Halo and Forza, mostly), and as a Media Device for my Plasma TV.

I see the new ryzen based APUs with as a great way to beat consles for around their price. if you can spend a little more like 600-700 (the cost of the console+ some of the basics. ) you can still get a decent PC with a mixture of new and used.

Well, no.  With the existing specs, the 2400G can maybe go toe to toe with the under powered Xbox One (Like, the Xbox One is somewhat problematically under powered even just compared to the standard PS4).  It comes up short against a standard PS4.  And it can't even touch the PS4 Pro or Xbox One X.  You'll need to add a discrete GPU to 'beat' the consoles.  Simply put there is a LOT more GPU in the custom APUs in consoles.

depends on your budget, low end that's ok prices there haven't changed much (might be even better depending on the new APUs), mid range yes that is hard call it depends on your preferences, high end again it's completely fine prices have barely affected if at all

I'd still do a gaming PC myself, but maybe piece it together or do a used build for now. Ram is fucking crazy. I bought a 16GB DDR4 kit for 57$ in 2016 (not even deal shopping, it matched my theme) and now the same kit is like 180. 

GPUs are crazy, but not as crazy since it wont be long term like memory. 

SSDs are also pretty high in price as of recent time, though it's been getting better. I seriously would not use a mechanical hard drive as a boot drive in a new build ever. Hell not even a used build. 

Really, it's not a great time to build a pc, but maybe we'll see some used deals when the gpus get dumped on ebay. Who knows. 

You know what console's worth it in the mean time? the switch if the games are what you're into. Love mine. Not only will a lot of games not overlap with pc, it also serves as a portable device. 

 

Negativity aside, here's some positives on PC right now no one's talking about

-Generic mechanical keyboards. Holy shit I hate razor. Everyone here knows. But man generic Cherry switches have gotten CHEAP. And there's nothing wrong with that if you're not getting ripped off in the process or making customization and having QC that's worse than the kailh base you use. I have a ton of mechanical keyboards, and my favorite one is a pricey generic one I bought years ago. But I just picked up this. 30 USD 

EDGY AF, only red, but they're imitation blues and they feel GREAT to type on. Pretty consistent too. This is a great time to get a decent keyboard at a budget price. I shelved my old k70 for this one for now. Who knows how long itll last but 30 fucking dollars? Wow. And this isn't the only one. Monitors right now kick ass. Sure, you're still locked to team red or green for freesync or gsync, but in general you've never been able to get great stuff for so cheap. Trust me, I have more monitors than friends. You can get an IPS 144HZ 2560x1440 Korean monitor for 399$ right now for example, and a month ago it was 299. 

And it's not the only one I've seen. if you keep your eye out, you can get an IPS 1440p 144Hz panel near or under 300$ ! 

And there's crazy stuff out there. There's a 32:9 monitor from samsung. That's two 1080p screen no bezel. That's above ultrawide, I call that stupid wide. There's korean and name brand 40 inch ish 4k monitors, equivalent to 4 1080p monitors at 20 inches. Hell there's one from LG a friends just bought with 4 input PIP, it's amazing. It's only 700$. He uses the bottom half to game like the "stupid wide" from samsung for cheaper. 

Just a few years ago 1440p monitors for gaming at 144Hz were expensive as fuck, and those were TN. Then the IPS came out andcost even more. Now? 350$. Fuck yea. And you may remember before that all you could get really was an apple cinema display or a korean monitor with the same panel for YEARS, then there was finally an explosion of above 1080p monitors.
These past few years, and even more so now, is an awesome time to get a screen.

 

AMD has brought competition back
It's been a long boring intel dominated time of no gains (sandy is still fine), but things are exciting again, and 8 core cpus from AMD with SMT that compete? Wow. Fuck yea

Meltdown speculative execution flaw
Now this may sound bad, but guess what? The patches are cutting performance and causing issues of their own so far, especially with virtualization. As soon as intel makes new silicon with this fixed (will be a while) there will be a fuck ton of xeons being dumped on ebay. They will be cheap. You can get a lower core count high clock-rate for gaming or crazy core count for a workstation. I've seen xeon dumps before and seen them cray cheap, but I don't think we'll have ever seen a dump this big. Literally every company that decides to trash all theirs for security reasons will dump them to a reselling company that will dump them on ebay. 
An really, this flaw isn't a big deal for gaming, and you combine this with the fact that one would expect AMD to have some offerings for the server market by this time, everyone will be upgrading at once- for security and/or for whatever AMD or intel has to offer with this new age of competition.

Secondly there are so many games on pc that does doesn't exist on console or is shit to play with a controller.

No. Not at all. I went from a 970 to a 1080 and while the 1080 is obviously better by comparison, I will say my 970 was one strong little ninja. If you can hold out (hopefully not too much longer) then I’d say just be patient. It’s weird because my Microcenter (Brooklyn) has GTX 1080s in stock as I type this for $700. The g1 gaming editions. If you’re in the tristate area maybe go check them out? You can chose the route of getting a pre built and there’s some okay bundle deals going on but either buy a used 970 to hold you over or just wait it out. I just can’t recommend ever going to console after experiencing PC gaming, even if it’s significantly cheaper and readily available.
