What do you think is happening with the NCIX YouTube Channel?

This_guy1998

So with NCIX going out of business, what do you think will happen with the YouTube channel? It would be a shame to completely see it die since it has over a million subs. I know @LinusTech mentioned on a WAN that he would be interested in buying the channel but if that doesn't happen do you think something else could happen with it?

I think you're confused/got the wrong impression.

Linus said as he much as he'd like to buy it, it makes no financial sense.

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.

@ 51:13 linus talks about the channel and about how he would like to buy it but his relationship with NCIX hasn't been as good as it was for the last bit. You must be thinking about a few weeks back when he said it made no sense to buy NCIX as a whole. And at @56:36 linus said he would buy the channel.

Also the channel is still getting views and subs even though the channel hasn't posted for two months.

Buying the channel wouldn't necessarily do anything positive for them.

I'd be VERY interested in buying back my baby...

But it's quite complicated due to ncix's bankruptcy filing. Because the branding is so similar to ncix, surely someone who acquired the brand would expect to get it.

So I might have to negotiate with them (if that's even possible).

Chance are anything with value will be sold to raise funds, so if NCIX is bought to be dismantled and liquidated you could probably buy it, if they buy it to restructure and keep it viable they will probably want to keep it. I have no idea how bankrupt NCIX is, and generally they won't tell you what they're gonna go until they've done it, but by all means put in an offer, you did basically build that sucker and gave it the best chance it had.

Yours faithfully

I really hope you get it! To me Netlinked daily was a great way to get my daily dose of tech news, would be awesome if it make a comeback.

Aside from fond memories, would there be any point financial or otherwise to do so?

This seems like something you could do under another name without buying the rights, unless of course there is some kind of limitation imposed in the contract you worked out when starting LTT.

Financial incentive would be just to have another show to produce. It's relatively easy to wrote, it's a proven format, and it's got an audience already.

Basically we'd start work on it right away, the sales team would have 3 new spots per week to sell and it would be profitable immediately.

By comparison, starting a new channel is a lot of work before it starts generating any real revenue for the company - and it might never take off (see channelsuperfun).

^all sound business factors in the decision.

With all of that said, I don't really need a reason to do this and we could probably do a daily tech news show on Tech Quickie. It would mostly be out of sentimentality.

Though an advantage of having the channel opposed to doing it on tech quickie is the people who actually want netlinked are already there, whilst tech quickie has a different audience and could lead to idk unsubbing? sooks having a sook? idk?

Supposedly they are over $35 million in debt with a few million owed to the owner.

Also according to /u/exncix they only had one CPU left when they closed. I went back and read that user's posts and some of the stories were interesting.

Would a tech news segment not overlap what the Wan show provides, albeit, in a smaller, easily digestible format? Granted, the Wan Show gives us bits and pieces of some of the inner workings of LTT, though I fear the news bit would be diminished somewhat by the presence of a tech news channel being run alongside.

Good point, I suppose the Wan Show is flexible enough (content-wise) where having a channel take up the tech news won't impact it much.

I could see it possible for Netlinked styled videos to fit relatively easily onto TechQuickie without seeming out of place. The premise of TechQuickie is to convey lots of information very concisely, and Netlinked also does the same. I would LOVE to watch "Netlinked" styled vids done by the LMG crew. @LinusTech

I'd be VERY interested in buying back my baby...

But it's quite complicated due to ncix's bankruptcy filing. Because the branding is so similar to ncix, surely someone who acquired the brand would expect to get it.

So I might have to negotiate with them (if that's even possible).

Linus

Is it possible that Canada Computers and Electronics acquired NCIX? They've immediately took up two of NCIX's former locations, one of which I've already confirmed has "soft opened" (haven't had grand opening yet).

No, they just took over the leases.

They would still need warehouses and offices right? I think this is their first foot into Western Canada so I guess it's not a long shot. xD Opening several new locations in a new market without any proper infrastructure is a bad idea. *Ahem Target Canada*

To me, the thing that made the NCIX Tech Tips channel great were the hosts, not the channel itself.

Sure, @LinusTech could buy the channel, but all he is really buying is the subscribers, there's zero chance he would be able to keep the name if the brand were to be relaunched so I wouldn't really be bothered about the sentimentality, but then again it is where Linus started so he may just want the channel to make sure the videos never go away.

None of the hosts will be there (unless you count Linus as a host still), and the current subscribers may not like the current LTT style. If it was me, I would only buy the channel if I could get people like Julia and Keys back on board and make it as it was a few months ago, but that is unlikely. So it would basically be just as easy to create a show called 'Techlinked Daily' on the Tech Quickie channel as Linus said

Linus might have to put a bounty on your head. Sounds like an something they could and probably might do for floatplane.

EDIT: After doing some digging on Twitter. It seems like Julia and Anthony are already part of another retailer starting their own channel with a format similar to NetLinked. Mike's Computer Shop. Haven't heard of them, but they seem to also be in the Greater Vancouver Area. Looks like downtown Vancouver.
