So apparently what Apple is doing with FaceID is actually very promising. I feel the demo that had a rough showing due to the iPhone X coming out of a fresh reboot but the later demos showed that it worked pretty reliably. Apple puts a lot of time and effort into their R&D and it really shows, regardless of how you view the company. In this year alone the A11 and FaceID are shaking things up quite a bit. 

 

It will be interesting to see how the rest of the industry picks up on what Apple is doing. TouchID popularized fingerprint passcodes and now we all have that on our phones....well....not the iPhone X .

I am legtimately impressed with it. I personally would never use it, I'd use my fingerprint instead. But its nice to see alternate tech take off

That’s not what the security ananlyst were looking at here. 

 

If Apples stats were to be believed, getting a duplicate fingerprint is 1:50,000 while getting a duplicate face is about 1:1,000,000

 

So pure numbers it’s already significantly more secure. Not to mention you can’t fool FaceID by lifting a fingerprint off a glass or by making a mask or with a photo. 

 

Speed and convenience might have a solid argument in favor of TouchID, but the way I see it, I’m looking at my phone a lot, especially when it’s on a desk and I’m not touching it. Why not take advantage of that?

We'll see. TouchID actually fails quite often for me since I often have sweaty hands (live in a hot climate); not uncommon to have to wipe both my thumb and the button down.

Well Apple wasn’t the first to put biometric authentication to phones but they were the first to get it right thanks to their acquisition of Authentec in July 2012. When Samsung added fingerprint ID to their band aid phone Galaxy S5, it was a swipe pad scanner which only works half the time.

I’d wait until it matures. Until then, I’d stick to Touch ID which is still way ahead that what companies use to log in attendance of employees. My previous employer has that.

I notice that when I’m drenched in sweat after working out, Touch ID doesn’t work until I wipe my thumb with a towel but it works even if the finger is just damp.

Interesting. Perhaps it depends on the person but mine has to be almost completely dry for it to work.

Apple is actually far behind android.

My android phone can read my thoughts and verify that it is actually me based on what I am thinking about, then it allows me to enter the rest of the 5-step verification process.

1- password

2- fingerprint

3- iris scan

4- facial scan

5- person come to my house to verify it is me

Then i can safely and securely get into my android phone.

Everyone I knew with an S5 hated the finger print sensor ? most of them admitted how much better Apples implementation of it was on the iPhone 5s. Man those were the days.....

I think the GS5 is one of the ugliest smartphone designs ever which is made worse by the crappy swipe pad fingerprint ID.

It depends how it's been implemented. If it recognizes every time you look/glance at the phone intentionally and doesn't anytime you do it accidentally then it's better. That is of course a big IF. Sure there are still the niche cases of when you want to unlock the phone while it's not really in view, but for most people those are rare occurrences.

 

Apple Pay with Face ID does seem more inconvenient though. But again, if it works better the rest of the time than that's a trade off I'd be happy with since I unlock my phone under traditional conditions far more than any other circumstances.

Where are those figures from? Apple's white paper on FaceID said it was 1/1,000,000 for Face ID and 1/50,000 for Touch ID.

Of course every identical twin gets screwed over, since they have the same face but different fingerprints.

 

I would guess that they're sharing the most favorable FaceID stats they found (like any other company would), but it is impressive.

Why do I feel I should be..impressed? It's not an Apple hate thing, Google could be doing the same and I'd still yawn.

 

Called me old fashion, but I'd rather use my fingerprint than have my device scan my face. One is discrete, the other is kinda creepy. Even then, the alleged extra security is irrelevant for every single LTT member. No one cares about you enough to track your fingerprints lmao.

Not sure how one is more discrete than the other. Its not like you have to make your eyes pop out of your head like you do with the Note 8 for Iris Scanning. It seems likes its going to very casual. 

 

And the phone doesn't care what your face looks like, all it sees are points on a 3D graph.

Apple says that won't affect anything since makeup, sweat, and the like it don't change the structure of your face. It's more advanced than that.

Well the only twins I know look exactly alike.  I'm not exaggerating either.  Even their mother has a hard time telling them apart.  Their voices are slightly different though, so you can usually pick up on that.
