i7-8700k & Coffee Lake CPUs

Anyone else think Intel has been a little too quiet during AMD's comeback? Well, judging from these benchmarks and rumoured CPU lineup for 8th generation chips, I'd say they listened to what AMD had to say, and now are ready to reply. The i7-8700k looks like a very capable chip with 6 cores and 12 threads, but what honestly interests me is the i5-8600k, with 6 cores and 6 threads (rumoured, I should point out). Curious to see how it'll stack up to AMD's lineup, as the Ryzen 7 is still offering more cores, but as Intel always seems to get right, I'm sure single-core performance will be excellent and the chips will clock to higher frequencies.

Let me know what you think. My biggest concern for Intel is everyone who had a system that was a few years old switch/upgrade to Ryzen, and I'm not sure how many people are left in that category who would be heading in Intel's direction. Just food for thought.

rip 6 core x299

--

is there a IPC gain at least? or is intel just slapping 2 more cores on mainstream to get at least some new market share

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

I can't see i3's having 4 cores and 8 threads, it's just not going to happen at the targeted audience they are marketing to (people with not enough money to spend on the lowest end i5).

Given the IPC scores are within margin of error, you're looking at 1-2% at best.

so, within 4-5% of skylake or something

i3s are for prebuilts, techies buy pentium, $800 or so for a decent prebuilt i5 machine which is too much for most people

0% There has been no IPC gain since skylake.

i thought kaby was like 1-2% better than skylake and now cannonlake is like 1-2% better than kaby lake

probably within margin of error / higher base frequencies, or some shit.

If true then go clean yourselves up 7700k owners because you've been FUCKED. i7 -> i3 in 8 months

i7 owners had to get FUCKED sooner or later, Intel couldn't sit around with 4 cores anymore now that Ryzen is here.

Nope.

Yeah LTT said the Core i3 4C/8T CPU was fake on the WAN show. Seems like more accurate rumors indicate the core i3 is a pure quad core with 4 threads (which makes a whole lot more sense).

If they wanted to add more cores to the i3 line then in my opinion the most logical thing to do is have...

Pentiums: 2 cores/ 4 threads (like current line up)

i3's: 4 cores/4 threads

i5's: 4 cores/ 8 threads

i7's: 8 cores/16 threads

i7 8800X: 16 cores/ 32 threads

Does anyone agree with me?

And nope. Any slight gain you might see will be because the IMC is better. Outside of that all 3 are the same, there hasn't been an IPC gain since skylake and even that gain is largely down to DDR4 RAM vs DDR3

It wasn't officially, it was just some guy that commented on the fact that you can easily edit the registry to show whatever you want in task manager.

But apart from that no official response.

Still top to the bottom of the mainstream stack in 8 months thats a colossal dick move, + R.I.P the resale value on a 7700k

I think it's already been confirmed that Cannon lake will be 6 cores for i5 and i7.

But yeah that would be the more optimal solution ^^^ I'm assuming they stuck with 6 cores on i7 because of package issues (probably need a bigger socket since they also want the IGPU still on the die.)

Looks to me like marginal IPC gains, if any over Kaby Lake with just two more cores...  If these scores reflect reality, then there really isn't much reason for me to even consider upgrading from the 6700k any time soon...

I'm really curious about the Zen+ core coming soon (i think very late 2018 or 2019), probably not a higher core count but if AMD can get in a better IMC and higher clocks, that'll be really good.
