Atari’s new Ataribox console

Update 18.07.17

Eurogamer reports that the console will be launched as part of a crowdfunding campaign.

Quote

UPDATE 3.30pm: Since we reported on this story more details have come to light via a French note to investors issued at the end of last month. This note indicates the new Ataribox is to be crowdfunded, a detail which was left out of today's press release.

“To limit risk taking, this product will initially be launched within the framework of a crowdfunding campaign,” the note reads.

Quote

“our objective is to create something new, that stays true to our heritage, while appealing to both old and new fans of Atari.”

No actual specs yet beyond being clad in wood and it's external io.

Quote

The new Ataribox is clearly inspired by the classic wood found on the Atari 2600, and the new console features ribbed lines, a raised back, and a front panel that can either be glass or wood. Indicator lights glow through these materials, and Atari is including SD card support, a HDMI port, and four USB ports on the Ataribox. Two versions of the Ataribox will be released, one in wood, and one in black / red.

In terms of games the console looks to be able to emulate old titles as well as current ones. Unfortunately this sounds to me like an Android based system rather than a bespoke console. As the article states I hope this isn't the case and that Atari actually developed a standalone system.

Quote

Atari plans to deliver classic games in the Ataribox, alongside “current content.” It’s not clear if that current content involves simply republishing Rollercoaster Tycoon, but it appears that the Ataribox will be similar to the NES and SNES Classic in providing access to old titles in modern retro hardware. While Atari has licensed its brand recently, the company is involved in the creation of the Ataribox. Hopefully that doesn’t mean Atari is just licensing its brand again for a partner to create and manage the hardware.

The physical size of the console gives me some hope though. If it turns out to be an android based box at that size I'd expect something like the X1 or next gen tegra.

On topic that looks nice but it looks pretty small which would imply either: Its thermals are terrible or its components are so weak it doesn't generate much heat. Either way apart from a nice concept piece I doubt this will be playing modern games in anything greater than 720/1080p

I'm thinking some Android-esque abomination with an Atari emulator slapped over it.

Aside from the nice design, I'm not expecting much, to be honest.

I'll stick to my All-in-one Emulation desktop-cabinet-laptop thingy. (work in progress)

Well this is good: A me too on the NES mini.

Seriously if it was an actual console looking to compete anywhere higher it would fail spectacularly. This on the other hand has a chance to succeed: Just the Atari games people already seek out and they might be able to do some Android shit like youtube and netflix on it too, sounds just fine to me specially if priced right.

My exact thoughts. Wow looks sleek :) Bet its shit though.

Y'know what would be better?

An original Atari console with a custom fancy pantsy wooden enclosure. And RGB. And a few hardware modifications to keep with the times (I'm thinking at least VGA port if not HDMI, some expanded memory and an SD card slot). Wonder if I still have any Atari in storage. Should call my dad this weekend and have him dig one up <__<

This seems like quite a mistake.

Atari has already released a plethora of Plug n Play systems including ones with 100+ built in games(Atari Flashback). Atari games are also so out of date that only extremely nostalgic people would even want to play at all, replay value is slim to none. On top of that, this console isn't a replica of the original design which throws it out for many collectors.

Honestly, who is the target consumer?

- ASUS X99 Deluxe - i7 5820k - Nvidia GTX 1080ti SLi - 4x4GB EVGA SSC 2800mhz DDR4 - Samsung SM951 500 - 2x Samsung 850 EVO 512 -

- EK Supremacy EVO CPU Block - EK FC 1080 GPU Blocks - EK XRES 100 DDC - EK Coolstream XE 360 - EK Coolstream XE 240 -
