Though I guess Titan Xp doing 11 TFLOPS FP32 at 250W TDP doesn't paint it a rosey picture. But at the same time, AMD could be overestimating TDP.

 

And the AIO cooler adding 75W TDP makes me think they're using TDP wrong. Unless the AIO cooler actually has better performance.

At that high power draw I'd expect any kind of air cooler to not be able to cope with the full TDP, so it sounds like the air-cooled one is power-restricted for the sake of keeping temps safe.

Then it'd be insanely efficient. Due to the fact that it's AMD, it's likely that it doesn't draw as much power as people expect, but the NCUs in the arch are a lot hotter than they first thought.

Yeah. Anywhere between 100 and 165W for the 560. But that's Polaris, and this is Vega.

To be fair though and ramped up clocks to 1.6 ghz so power had to go up.

with quoted standard configs of 13 TFLOPS that does indeed seem reasonable. 20% performance downclock, and knowing Apple, that is peak, so thermal throttling even past that is likely.

Overclocked 1080ti's are usually around the 300w mark, so Vega being the same should not be a problem if the performance is greater (or just similar).

nope. The problem with hawai was that on stock models they reused the same blower cooler from lower end SKUs. That was stupid.

 

here too what really matters is that the cooler suits the TDP, and keeps rx vega GPU running cool.

 

AMD learned their lesson with hawai, they will not launch Another bad cooler design which runs too hot. So I'm not too worried...

So what? Users of top end GPUs will be able to afford beefy PSUs anyway. So long as they can manage to cool it well enough to keep it acceptable and not sound like a jet engine, who cares? I'm personally fine for high power use on the top end cards, provided they have the grunt to match.

Well, every reference (Founders Edition/Frontier Edition) card will sound like a jet engine because they are blower style... Any half decent AI card will not sound like a jet engine.

Provided they actually have the cooling for 300 watts of power draw, I certainly don't care as long as it's fast enough.  Even a lowly 650W PSU that cost me $60 will easily handle a 300W card and a Ryzen CPU with breathing room to spare.

 

A Strix 1080ti uses like 285 watts.

 

Gaming Vega isn't going to be a massive jump in power requirements over the Fury I have now.

AMD rates it's Graphics cards with TBP (Typical Board Power), not TDP. So I would assume it actually consumes 300W-375W in this case.

 

And sometimes they specify the absolute maximum power draw, which for two 8pins means:

75W from PCIe and 2x 150W from dual 8pin = 375W

 

Although what you posted is technically correct. TDP =/= TBP or Power draw

Though I guess Titan Xp doing 11 TFLOPS FP32 at 250W TDP doesn't paint it a rosey picture. But at the same time, AMD could be overestimating TDP.

 

And the AIO cooler adding 75W TDP makes me think they're using TDP wrong. Unless the AIO cooler actually has better performance.

Titan xp doing 11 at 250W gives 13 at approximately 300W as well, so it's almost the same power efficiency isn't it?

TDP might be the cooling rating of their cooling solution, which would give an idea on how well it could be overclocked ?
