The researchers, Hector Marco and Ismael Ripoll from the Cybersecurity Group at Polytechnic University of Valencia, found that it’s possible to bypass all security of a locked-down Linux machine by exploiting a bug in the Grub2 bootloader. Essentially, hitting backspace 28 times when the machine asks for your username accesses the “Grub rescue shell,” and once there, you can access the computer’s data or install malware.

this vulnerability it's so simple that I'm astonished anyone could think of finding it in the 1st place

the affected Grub2 loader versions range from 1.98 (December, 2009) to 2.02 (December, 2015)

the open source software can be both a bless and a piece of hell

why, you may ask - because multiple developers work on different pieces that when put together may not work flawlessly - look at how long this vulnerability existed

Wow that's a pretty big fuck-up. Not a super serious problem though since it required quite a few things, and it has already been patched, but still a very easy attack to execute with potentially big consequences.

The exploit also apparently only worked on some BIOS versions, on systems with a certain amount of RAM as well as GRUB (although most versions of it), and you needed physical access to the computer.

This only worked on certain versions of grub with certain RAM configs and certain BIOS versions.

 

Keep in mind that grub doesn't equal all of linux. There are multiple different bootloaders that people can choose from.

 

Recently systemd has (arguably) started to become more popular due to various reasons.

For everyone saying "wow" or "how did they let this slip for so long," this is referred to as a buffer overflow attack. There is not a piece of software out there that doesn't have some vulnerability to this. It's only a matter of how cockamamie you have to get to make it work. Windows has tons of them. So does Linux. I can use Libreoffice writer if I really want to, on any platform, to overwrite a return address.

Reminds me of reading a post on /r/talesfromtechsupport where /u/bytewave got promoted to senior staff and found out that special characters would equal a 0 in there PW database. So; $%&$=0000. At least it's being handled well and is patched quickly.
