[UPDATE, CONFIRMED] Sony enabled PS2 backwards compatibility for the PS4 without telling anyone

When Eurogamer received their Star Wars Battlefront PS4, they were also given four codes to download the following games: Super Star Wars, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, Star Wars: Racer Revenge, and Star Wars: Bounty Hunter. Okay cool, free games. Here's the interesting part, they weren't ported to the PS4 but rather being emulated on the PS4. When Eurgamer booted up the games, the familiar PS2 logo popped up and there was also a system in place to emulate PS2 memory cards in order to save your spot in games at the very beginning of the emulation.

 

A prompt at the beginning of the emulation  also told them that the "select" and "start" buttons were mapped to the left and right sides of DualShock's 4's trackpad, respectively. If the games were ports then there would be no need for the prompts and the memory card emulation. Here's another interesting bit, the apparent emulator upscaled titles from their original 512x448 resolutions to a new native resolution of 1292x896.

 

While PS3 emulation may not be coming to the PS4 anytime soon, or ever, PS2 emulation is still very welcome and still very great to see. Although they really should get to work on finding some way to emulate PS3 games on the PS4. I know it's technically difficult, but I have faith in you, Sony. Now, before you fellow PS4 owners start playing your PS2 games on your PS4, don't even bother, because it's not ready yet. I tried playing Battlefront 2, Crazy Taxi, and Matrix: Path of Neo on my PS4, and on all four games the PS4 said the discs were unsupported. It's interesting that there's a possible PS2 emulator in place yet Sony is locking everybody out of it, except for the four Star Wars titles listed above. Tech Radar has reached out to Sony to confirm the emulator's existence, but until then you can enjoy Digital Foundry's video on the apparent PS2 emulator.

 

 

UPDATE: A Sony representative has confirmed that PS2 backwards compatibility is coming to the PS4.

"We are working on utilizing PS2 emulation technology to bring PS2 games forward to the current generation. We have nothing further to comment at this point in time."

i might buy one just to place ps2 games.....

wasn't the xbox's 1  limited to certain titles?

As I said in my OP, it's only turned on for those 4 games, and probably only for the digital versions of those four games. Not sure if the physical discs will work... I tried playing a few different PS2 games on my PS4 and none of them worked.

There are PS2 emulators for PC...  :rolleyes:

 

some games work better than others.. gran turismo 4 for example runs like crap

But that means it can play the others unless they messed around with them.

Yes, because Microsoft is taking every game case by case and porting over games based on popularity. Right now there's a little over 100 Xbox 360 titles compatible on the Xbox One.

Your post is kinda funny but not factually correct. Xbox One is emulating many Xbox 360 games while PS4 is only emulating PS2 and only those Star Wars games ATM. Cool to see though and YES there are some PS2 emulators but I haven't gotten one to work properly though. There is always something wrong with the 3d rendering for me. Like having the background missing or something. Also, Xbox has plenty more features that are great.

There are some PS2 emulators already on PC. I haven't gotten them to work properly though. Works just not properly. Graphical errors.

This isnt anything special they did the same thing with the ps3 and buying "ps2 classics" I have Capcom vs SNK2 on my ps3. They work on all PS3s

 

There are even tools to make any ps2 games into "PS2 Classics" that will run on the ps3.

 

I'm willing to bet this is the EXACT same, we are never going to see the ps4 running off a ps2 DVD only downloadable "PS2 Classics"

No it doesn't. Once its (PS2Emu) is setup correctly. Fact is, I still have the GT4 ISO sitting in my PC, I wouldn't do that if it didn't work.

I sunk many hours into it with my Xbox controller ;P

It was the one game I wanted PS2 emulation for, and tried it, and was very surprised it held 50-60fps on my Amd9550 (2.6Ghz) without much configuring, but with those 50fps drops, sound and realtime speeds were affected, so with some tweaking on the emu, I got it working closer to 55-60fps, then OC'd CPU, now a 99% constant 60fps title, and again on my 2600K its pegged at 60fps (without an overclock its still fine) from years ago.

 

Have not looked at it since, but I doubt its gone downhill that far that it no longer works.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz
