AMD Zen

They already taped out Zen so next year. Skylake only has 4 cores so Zen will be awesome.

Just for fits and giggles I went back and read some reviews of the x6, the most awesome cpu of its day and one that still seels for 3 digits on EBAY. Entertaining to say the least.

The biggist thing in AMD's favor right now is software developement, which moves at a glacial pace. Game design starts 4 years before it is released. Also coding for multicore cpu's is allot harder then single thread. Then there is cache optimizing.

Every game devoloper who wants to continue to pay the rent will be trying to squeeze EVERY fps out of eight Jaguar cores running at 1.7 ghz. VLIW is dead. This is good news for AMD. Frankly the IPC doesn't have to match intel. The old FX line still has more POTENTIAL horsepower then the Haswell 4 cores. Developers just never had to go the extra mile to make use of it, until now. Even though the article about how game developers, when polled, chooose the FX 8350 over I5 was written two years ago it is even more relevant today given

On the APU they just anounced the 7890k!!!!!

Ok hold the laughter. APU's could be the future, I remember when the L2 cache was external, seems to run faster on chip. HSA is also on the amd consoles so that will garentee it will be developed IMHO

Very much yes.

If I were to build a budget PC today, I would preffer AMD/AMD route, because I have faith in DX12/Vulkan.

And TW, APUs ARE the future. Today's iGPUs are enought for office work and light 3D modeling. 2 years in the future I see APUs running LoL, DotA, CS:GO at 1440p. If AMD keeps on pushing the integrity as they are today, NO other option will be better for competitive enviroment, because they will have lowest latency of all.

AMD has potential, but doesn't do the most with it. Intel and nVidia look to be a bit behind on the raw hardware performance, but they take it up with better implementation.

it depends on your needs pal, dont wait because you want to "save AMD", its a company and they should save them selfs.

If you need the performance now, go for skylake or haswell, they are both fine options

On topic, last time i waited for an upgrade with AMD i got extremely disappointed, the piece of crap of 8150 was barely faster than my 1100t, i sold it and got a 2500k that i own until this day, running at 4.7ghz since day 1, with 0 complains

Do you think that waiting to see what AMD/Zen has to offer would be a wise decision?   or should I just go for a skylake build.... so confused....

Well, AMD's own marketing materials claim Zen will be a 40% IPC improvement over their current designs. Even in that probably optimistic scenario, I doubt 40% is enough to catch a Skylake i5 or i7 in gaming. The FX series is probably close to a 40% IPC deficit behind Skylake already.

There is still one thing we have to think about. GHZ. AMD usually clocks better.

Firstly, I don't think that's even true. Secondly, to reach such high clocks they begin to consume absurd amounts of power and need high-end motherboards for power delivery. And thirdly, even overclocked to 5 GHz (say, the FX-9590), performance remains aggressively mediocre.

Finally, we have no idea how Zen will overclock.

I hope for the love of cookies they name Zen, Phenom III instead of using the hated FX series name! :D

Bulldozer was a failure and Piledriver should been released from the start and Steamroller should been made X6 and X8 CPUs of...

If Intel released an unlocked i3...

..again.

= I've a feeling that, they learnt their lesson with those unlocked 1st gen I3s. I mean, back 2010, Tom's Hardware's

"Overclocking: Get The Performance Of A Core i5 From Core i3" might not been what Intel wanted people to see....

If ZEN OCs as good as my FX 8320 did, then DAMN, that chip will be a beast (my FX 8320 OCd from 3.5GHz stock to 4.4GHz without any voltage increases)

yeah but the problem is that architecture is highly inefficient and the IPC is abysmal, even at 4.4ghz your FX chip is still slower than an i5-4460@3.2ghz for example.

  • 2 weeks later...

What do you guys think about AMD's new Zen core? How will you think it will be Spec and price wise? Do you think it'll be worth the wait? My stance on it is that I think it will be a great core core but I want to see the Enthusiast Spectrum of what they have to offer because Next year I'm pretty much rebuilding my Pc So it's I either go with the 58/6820k or AMD's Zen Equivalent because Next year will be one great year for Cpu/Gpu Enthusiasts since we have The rest of Skylake/Broadwell-E/Zen/Pascal/Artic Island releasing in 2016 if nothing gets pushed back.

I am pretty sure everybody is hoping zen will be amazing and bring back AMD into the CPU fight with intel.

I have this feeling only the top CPU will be "new" and the rest will be refresh again.

As for performance.. No comments.

No they're not using the bulldozer Core at all next year all Cpus they release will be Zen based

It's hard to really be sure of how well unreleased products will perform, especially with AMD's recent habit of inflating their numbers a bit *COUGHFuryXCOUGH* but I am hoping for big things from it as AMD really needs a successful release in their aging line of CPUs. If Zen is really as good as people say it will be, then not only will AMD give Intel the kick in the pants they need, but it would also give us the benefit of more competition meaning lower prices and more performance.

That said, I don't recommend waiting for unreleased products that are more than a month off. Usually they aren't worth the wait or the hype that comes with them. My advice is to buy the best product for your money at the time you decide to purchase.

I've built 3 PC's, but none for myself... In fact, I'm using an iMac that my dad bought for me as my desktop. Awkward...

Please don't say "SSD drive." By doing so, you are literally saying "Solid State Drive Drive" and causing my brain cells to commit suicide. The same applies to HDD (Hard Disk Drive) and PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express).

I don't even mind AMD not taking the throne just being almost there to tie with intel latest offerings would be good enough for me. On paper their Zen core looks like a monstrosity but Execution is KEY.

Really? Can we be sure of it? Will it even be a 100% zen release? I'm sceptical considering how they do things with gpus.

Yes They've already presented their road map and Bulldozer was not on it for 2016. Last core for bulldozer was this year. Their new core will be using SMT #Hyperthreading Bulldozer doesn't have that Build Bulldozer runs CMT
