The Unspeakable Happened

mchllatham03

Not sure where to post this, or if anyone would even be interested, but...

I built a pretty powerful x99 based computer late last year and it had been performing very well.

It had an Asus x99 Deluxe, Intel 5820k, Corsair h100i,  gtx 980 reference, samsung 850 pro 256gb and a 3tb wd red in a painted h440. (black with white vents and trim).

I was moving it from the desk to the car, I tripped going down the steps and... CRASH!!!   I was ok, but the tower... not so much.  There was a moment of panic and cursing, then I immediately started taking it apart and inspecting all the parts.  I don't have any cringe pics with the motherboard, graphics card, etc. still in the case.  Most of those items didn't seem to be damaged except for the cpu cooler, and obviously the case.

Here is the aftermath.

post-72245-0-76253000-1432949478_thumb.j

I knew I would at least need a new case, but since I found some good deals and had a few extra dollars, I decided to make a few upgrades while I was at it.

The h440 was replaced by a corsair 750d, the h100i was replaced by the new h110i gtx, intake and radiator fans were replaced with noctua nf-a14 pwm's.  I also bought a hyperx predator 240gb, and a couple 500gb 850 evo's,

I was very anxious to see if my parts had survived, and to my extreme relief, the pc posted!!!

The only thing that died from the fall was the 3tb wd red, but everything on it was backed up to my wd my cloud.

I installed windows on the predator m.2 drive, and set the 850 evo's in raid 0.

I only took 1 progress pic while I was putting everything back together... sorry.

post-72245-0-20125000-1432951924_thumb.j

I may post some more pics of the fully built system later.  I am just so relieved that nothing catastrophic happened to the main components.

With that much damage to the case I would suspect all the components, even if they boot now they will have a severly restricted life time .  No-way you could claim it all on insurance?

Sure our house insurance covers, non named, items to the value of £2000 (limited to £250 per item so Mobo/power supply/case/memory [bundled]/hard drive and or SSD, covered in full CPU/GPU maybe not so) against accidental damage.

Think the total is like £100,000 for fire theft etc.  Should know the exact figures as I am responsible for the insurance but it is through my bank so besides checking, years ago, it covered everything I need/want, have pretty much ignored it.

I did take the cpu out and checked the pins right after it happened, I didn't put every step in the post because I felt it would have been too long, but thanks for the comment.

I didn't even think to check with my house insurance.  I will definitely do that.

To take it somewhere?

Why? PCs are not meant for moving around a lot...maybe once or twice to go to a LAN party or something

If you regularly move you should have a SFF box or notebook instead...

moving a PC is really bad for the GPU and motherboard, and also if you have a large heatsink CPU cooler

Alright? He still most likely had to take it somewhere...With gentle care and proper securing in the vehicle, it will be absolutely fine.

Unlike others, I don't have a problem with longer posts. I would have loved a longer, more in-depth piece about the events. How you climbed to your feet after the fall with your shin bone protruding outward, but you were more worried about your PC, so you didn't notice, and what have you.

In all seriousness, you got off lucky. I would love a longer write-up to hear more about what happened, if you're ever willing. :-)

My horror story of the day:

I was replacing the thermal paste on my CPU, like I've been planning to for a few months now. I was unscrewing my heatsink, and I was having trouble. So my mom gave me a hand (she's worked with PC hardware before.) After she thought she had it unscrewed, she tugged on the heatsink, and I could hear what almost sounded like velcro being torn.. The CPU lifted out of the socket, attached to the heatsink. The thermal paste kind of fused the two, so it came out with the heatsink, attached to the copper pipes. Cleaned everything up with rubbing alcohol, and re-seated it all with new paste. The PC wouldn't even post. I was scared, as I can't really afford a new CPU, so I'd be out of a desktop for a few weeks if it was dead. So we tore it apart again, and re-seated it, making sure it set completely properly. Luckily, it posted, and said a new CPU was installed. Checked the BIOS, and everything was good.

Unfortunately my temperatures didn't really improve a tonne, but oh well. Better than a dead CPU.

Yeah, dont do that :)

You could be taking it to a computer repair shop for instance, it's not uncommon for people to have to move their computers, or take them to other places for something important, I have moved my desktop many times (Mind you it is old and is no where near as heavy as the build shown probably weighs) But not everyone has a notebook so they have to take their desktop, like for a LAN party or something similar like you said. It's going to happen more than once or twice like you said.

Downloading programs from CNet is not a good idea, as they will commonly include unwanted, and sometimes dangerous bloatware... The more you know.

I agree, when I take my rig to a friends house, I remove my gpu, and put a seatbelt on it, but I would take the dell everywhere for that if it wasn't super underpowered and didn't have a dead motherboard... I really should upgrade it, a Athlon x4 630 and 650ti can't do much nowadays. :(
