AMD drop a tease for RDNA 2 in Fortnite

Master Disaster

I'm interested in AMD's response for the next quarter or two. We got a very impressive GPU release by Nvidia coupled with good competition on the laptop end with Intel's Tiger Lake so the moves AMD makes in response will be the most important for the company since their release of Ryzen I think.

I want AMD to knock it out of the park and hit Nvidia right between the eyes, but previous releases haven't lived up to the hype so I'm not too hopeful..

What is different this time around is that AMD releases after Nvidia, with the two previous releases Nvidia could adjust accordingly because AMD either released first or spilled ALL the beans prior to their releases. They've been tightlipped and I wonder if it's due to the above.

Teasing a new GPU using Fortnite is a bit like using a 17 second fart as the opening sound for a high tier Opera.

PC - NZXT H510 Elite, Ryzen 5600, 16GB DDR3200 2x8GB, EVGA 3070 FTW3 Ultra, Asus VG278HQ 165hz,

Mac - 1.4ghz i5, 4GB DDR3 1600mhz, Intel HD 5000.  x2

Endlessly wishing for a BBQ in space.

Then do it on their website.

A gamer is more likely to be gaming than browsing a random hardware company website.

inb4 Epic has an exclusive deal to sell AMD cards only through their store for the first few months and it requires an Epic account of some kind...

But for reals, as much as I'd love to see AMD bring out something that competes on all levels and is what we've all been waiting for...we all know, deep down inside, that it's pretty unlikely to happen. I'd be happy just to see them match the 3080. I hope they don't try and stick HBM in there somewhere.

I personally feel that this teaser would have a bigger effect in a more elaborate game but that is just me

What other game has a user base of 350 million?

I wonder how bad radeon is gonna screw up this time.

At least they haven't let a run away hype train loose this time 😂

Makes perfect sense.

Just think of the massive number of kids who will be bothering their parents for a new GPU!

I mean, even with the 62% estimate of users under the age of 25...that still leaves potentially 129 million people you're advertising to. That's a pretty good return.

Same. I've had ATi and then AMD many many times and I always end up with some stupid driver issues and whenever I have nvidia it is always smooth sailing, except for that one time when a driver update almost killed my GTX 260 because it made everyone's fan profiles flat, no spin up at high temps. To their credit, they fixed it real quick at least.

I do really hope AMD can compete at the high end this time, and by compete I don't mean similar performance +/-10% but 300x the heat and noise. Looking at you, 290X!

That being said, I was expecting to say something along the lines of "To at least get nvidia to lower their obscene prices" this time once again but the 3080 for 699 is downright reasonable for 2020. The 3090 though................

Eh, I don't mind the price of the 3090. It makes sense for what its target market is. Plus, it's a nice $1,000 discount over last years Titan. People always seem to forget that.

And not fortnite. Guarantee that most actual gamers that are exciting about their launch arent playing fortnite. 😂

I'd say more gamers are going to see and hear about it in a game than if they just put something on their website. How often do you go to a GPU companies website?

Yeah and this probably didn't cost AMD that much to do. If it's not a featured island then they just paid the mapper to create it and maybe they also told their sponsored streamer to "discover" it. It's a DM map too so if it's any good then it would spread easily. I'd could say that I'd wish to have a brain to live in a world where I could say fortnite bad >:( and pretend like this is the stupidest thing in the world to do but that'd mean having a nonfunctioning brain.

Eh due to NVENC I'm basically defaulting to Nvidia anyway, but even if that were not the case I wouldn't expect AMD to bring anything to the table that comes close to the 3080 or 3090.

Pretty lame hype. They could drop a video of some popular game running at insane framerate at 8K or something on AMD Youtube channel. No comments, just the game and framerate in the corner. Now that would be an insane hype. And telling one.

That would require them to have something capable of that, really not sure about that...

I suspect they got direct order from Lisa Su herself to not say anything, thus not building a hype train that they can't deliver.

This is probably why. Nvidia could just slide in a Super or Ti cards after AMD made their announcement, creating price drops, which put them back on top again.

Hopefully it really lives up to it's name of big in terms of actual die size, better be packing a huge amount of CUs really. Many more than RX 5700 XT which is also a fairly small die.
