Distributed F@H Network Explodes in Popularity AND Power ~500 PFLOPS!!!

Who else wants to see LTT guys make a stupendously overpowered rig for distributed computing? Like one running Ryzen 3990X (dual Threadripper/EPYC even?) and 4x RTX Titan/2080Ti cards and see how much work it does in F@H (which is CPU+GPU) and also Rosetta@home (CPU only). I'd really like to see in realtime how it chews through workloads of both, maybe spiced with some other system metrics like temperatures and power consumption at those loads just to get an idea about that too.

 

I remember doing a lot of Rosetta@home workloads on my AthlonXP and Intel Core 2 Duo series years ago and how slow it went even at 100% utilization. And then I tried it again few months ago on overclocked 5820K and workloads were just falling through like they are nothing even with limited utilization. If I set it to fully utilize 5820K workloads were just flying through. Now Imagine a 3990X doing that with its 128 threads. I want to see that in realtime.

Viewing how it chews through it in a matter of seconds then wait half an hour to get the next job....

It's very impressive and great to see, but it is also perhaps a more amazing headline than it should be.  Summit is from 2018, and by next year Frontier will be running with 1.5 exaflops of nsa spying and encryption breaking "science and research" goodness, so clearly this is a market that moves quickly and even one year here or there can make a big difference.  Summit, being 2 years old, is thus at quite a disadvantage.

Not a bit, it just straight up was.  But, I like to look on the bright side of that - how cool must it be from their perspective to be able to send literally any amount of work and have it run right away.  Being bottlenecked by network capacity and not compute power must be weird in a good way

I just ran Rosetta@home again and it took like an hour to download 500MB of computation modules because it was downloading at or below 250KB/s for some reason. My line allows downloads at 10-12MB/s... Actual workloads at few kilobytes were downloaded in few seconds.

 

Noticed Rosetta@home has several COVID-19 marked jobs. I guess I'll run it for few days. It got much colder anyway and this heats up my room nicely XD

Just watched it I've asked Linus to put those dual Xeons to join Rosetta@home which is CPU only. And Rosetta@home actually hands over finished work to Folding@home project because Rosetta only searches for eligible protein structures and F@H actually tries folding them to see if they actually work. Work units don't go directly between projects, but they do share work at some point so it's smart we work together as this will feed more work to F@H.

Yeah that just goes to show how quickly they're improving.  The leap from one to the next means that all old ones effectively become irrelevant after a certain point, or to put it another way, can all be summed to equal just one or two current ones.

Are you sure you've got those numbers right? I'm only seeing about 90k-100K ppd. Granted this is with the medium preset which I assume limits power consumption since GPU usage is still near 100%.

Not "billions", the biggest is about $100 million.

And $10 per month to all the currently active contributors to FAH would amount to about $700'000/month...

Yeah I looked at the ballpark number of active users in the 20 or so teams with most active users here https://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_list.php?s=&srt=1

 

But that doesn't count duplicate usernames of which there can be quite a few (each team has a bunch of people who never changed the default "Anonymous" name)

You've got a passkey setup? The Quick returns Bonus really amplifies the points gain. The current unit i'm chewing on is worth just 15k points base. But with the QRB if it finished right now i'd earn over 160k. Reality is 140-150k seems more normal from the few i've done, (just started today and i am using a 2080Ti so yeah, chews quickly).
