This event has ended and I recommend you guys head over to the Folding Community Board for any general folding conversation.

Soooo from what I am gathering, I should put my GPU back to stock settings....Got it.

You may want to even experiment with under clock / volt, sometimes will barely impact your PPD while saving power and reducing heat.

A good idea for both thermals and stability here yes.  Saves you on your power bill long-term if you keep folding too.

I've put my 980ti at lower power for work and kept my fan speed up to keep it cool.  I haven't noticed any issues with finished worked being bad.

I'm struggling between AMD and Intel.  The last AMD I had was an Athlon with 64 bit started to come out.  After that I have been with the i7-3770k overclocked to 4.6ghz and still on it.

I've been looking at Ryzen 3900x and the i-9 9900 with the expectation I would "boost" to bring the ghz to at least 4.6ghz.  I'm aiming to future proof on the cpu and mobo, and then do the gpu later.

can't go wrong with AM4. The last AM4 cpu will be put out at the end of this year, 7nm with more optimizations apparently.  After that socket type changes with the 5nm processors being made.

Ok so hopefully my score will go up, currently have an idle machine running two evga gtx cards, a 970 and 980, had to download precisionx to stop the auto overclock as the temps were insane, measured 140f on the cooling fins alone.

Go for it.  GPU jobs seem much more common right now anyways.  Good idea removing the OC on those cards as well.  Happy folding!

I know there's been a lot of discussion about CPU jobs just not being worth it as the power used for the points obtained (efficiency in PPD/W) is significantly less than the GPU Work Units (WUs) but please take into consideration that while GPUs are stellar at processing certain types of WUs other equally important simulations can only be done on CPUs due to their complexity.

Over the last few weeks there have been 20-30 new COVID-specific WUs that have passed Beta testing and released to the Advanced and Regular streams and if you have the thermal headroom and spare threads on your systems please consider configuring a CPU slot for folding.

You running the full thread count on your CPU or 50-75% of them?  If full, it will toast your proc and (likely) run too hot.

It was running on all of 'em, but even on less, keep in mind I'm using a dual Xeon (Westmere) so not very power efficient overall compared to the more modern stuff. It does everything I need it to do very well, but there do seem to be better options if someone wants to fold with their CPU. :P

I've had about 10 threads of my 9900k running for the last two weeks.  I think its fine to set up a CPU slot, you don't have to give it ALL your power, guys.

Granted, the AVX256 workloads do crank the power and heat draw up, quite a bit.I find that running 10 out of 16 threads is stable enough for me.

Wasn't aware of this... Thanks for pointing this out!

I bet maybe a lot of people's GPU's are struggling for new work because so many people are favoring GPU folding over CPU?

Doing my part, just wish I would get WU's more frequently and had better video card. I have a nVIDIA GTS460 sitting on a shelf, was tempted to throw it in but looks like it's not supported :(. Any tips to make this better or is this as good as I can get? Note: no overclocks - all stock.image.png.cb090701786da825482082298ac9ec17.png

Hands down AMD 3900x. Beats the 9900K in everything for a lower price. Unless you are only gaming and nothing else.

With it estimating a 15-30k PPD on my R7 3700x (with 10 threads of 16) I'd say yes.  My R7 1700 only does about 50-75% of that with 14 threads.  I'll have to get more "concrete" numbers later when they each get a job.

I'm talking in general. There are people out there who use their systems for other stuff than folding XD

Don't sweat it, take care of yourself and family first, be able to pay your bills and do what you can.

A good money saving measure can be to only fold during off peak hours if your billing is setup that way.

Have a look if you get a cheaper electrical rate during the night etc. and only fold then, it can really help when you're on a budget.

Hey that's not a bad shout, thank you. I don't think we have a cheaper rate during the night, but I can check!

Someone's also messaged me to help see if I am able to optimize the power consumption so fingers crossed I can figure something out.

yep it had the stock crap corsair includes with the CLCs and was hard as a rock and not very thin. and I applied the "crap" paste I keep for low end systems I repair Arctic Alumina I will likely get some Grizley or something but for now its stable and happy

Well the 1700 is otherwise sitting in its plastic storage tray and the 3700x is an all-purpose main rig CPU so I have both cases covered!  Been playing DOOM and Stardew (mainly SD) lately so doubly so.

A cheap 2080 Ti is not that far off though for price/performance?

Gaming price/ performance is terrible on the 2080 ti vs 2070 Super. More than double price for 40% more fps.

For folding, 2x RTX 2060 is best value. The 2080 ti has good PPD and outstanding power efficiency but the cost to buy one is not worth it. Cheapest 2080 ti costs 1200 € here, RTX 2070 Super is 530 € and RTX 2060 is 330 €. I have a folding rig cost efficiency calculator (single, 2x and 3x GPU setups with kWh cost input) if you are interested.

I have a i9-9900K OCed to 5GHz and honestly I'd go for the 3900X now. I pretty much only game, but I've been thinking of streaming or something like that and the 3900X would be far better for anything other than gaming.

What is the PPD of the RTX 2060?

The 2060 KO seems to perform better than all the others?
