Worst graphics game of all time?

Wouldn't the earliest graphics-based games 'win' by default?  I mean, look at Sierra's Mystery House:

Destiny on PS4 had an item that had one pixel out of place on a model. It caused a large triangular spike to render out of the character. Millions of dollars built that game but they missed one pixel.

It's simple, given the constraint of the time, but not "bad", just simple.

Well, yes and no.  The tech was clearly limited, but it also looks like it was drawn by an eight-year-old still coming to grips with symmetry and perspective.  Look at that tree!

I guess it depends on what ur comparing against at the time.

 

Generally speaking though i would say anything on a Nintendo system is usually 'roughly' a generation or so behind other consoles and even further behind PC.

 

game specific, i couldnt really say unless u specify a generation/year and genre to compare against others.

 

I suppose any game stuck in dev hell is usualy behind in graphics if it ever release. DNF (Duke Nukem Forever) is probably the most obvious example i can think of at least. When it finally released it was a using a graphics engine and style a good 5 years old, though it most certainly could have been alot worse considering how long it was in dev hell for.

I have to agree with classic pong. If "worst graphics" is measured in density of pixels & colors pong can't be beat as the absolute worst.

Wait, I have to revise my answer. The worst graphics are those games that light up sprites in black, e.g. the Tiger handheld wristgames.

Early 3D games were pretty terrible, and usually an aesthetic downgrade from state-of-the-art 2D. Looking at the models in isolation (which were indeed ugly) is not enough to get the full extent of the problem: you have to play around a bit to notice how empty early 3D worlds looked in contrast to late 2D games, due to the added difficulty in constructing rich environments with moving cameras and ultra basic polygon graphs. A good example is to compare Simon the Sorcerer 2 (1995) with Simon the Sorcerer 3D (2002).

Yeah the N64/PS1/Saturn generation haven't held up well, though when they first came out they looked really impressive. Still some good games from that generation if you're willing to overlook their technical short comings. Nintendo's efforts at 3D on the SNES with the Super FX chip however are just rubbish.

 

I'm going to nominate Mission Impossible on the N64. Clearly a game that was rushed out the door before it was finished. It came 3 years after Goldeneye, with worse graphics and smaller mission areas. Pretty playable at the time, but has really not held up.

I don't know about worst graphics in games, since even going back to Pong, I can't really complain about the graphics. Some stuff ages worse than other stuff, but I can't think of a definitive "worst" - unlike for movies. I know the worst CGI in movies. Or at least I think I do.

Yes, and I showed the version for Apple II. The IBM DOS version was unlike anything for the time.

Prince Of Persia.

I’m surprised so many forum members know about the game!

About Wolf 3D and Doom, it’s not my type of game. My younger and older brothers do play it.  I just don’t like the shooting and blood.

You know, I actually think Pong is still quite ingenious - it's perfectly clear what's going on in the game at a glance, which is more than I can say for a lot of games during the N64 and PS2 eras.

You leave Ultima alone! Although tbh, these two in particular are probably the least graphically impressive of the series. I will, however, note that it's a shame that whoever capped the bottom image should have taken a few steps to the right, because the building there is literally labeled as "DA KGB"

 

Tbh, I see all your submissions that can be (for better of worse) attributed to taste and raise you a game which was literally destroyed by its graphics: Limbo of the Lost.

 

You see, Limbo of the Lost was a game that once started development as an Amiga game, but would eventually find its way onto store shelves as a PC game in 2008....only to be pulled within a day following a report detailing widespread plagiarism of game assets: https://lotl.fandom.com/wiki/Backgrounds

 

You see, the game's graphic "designer" had found that 3D modeling is a lot harder than he originally thought it would be, so he did what any other rational human being would do: boot up some of his favourite games and take screenshots which he would then edit in photoshop into what he'd envisioned. Hell, he may have gotten away with it, too if it wasn't for those meddling kids the fact that instead of using assets and artwork from (relatively) unknown sources who would be unlikely to take any legal action, he'd chosen to plagiarise games like Oblivion, Painkiller, Diablo, Vampire: the Masquerade and Unreal Tournament 2004.

 

Even if it wouldn't have come to light, Let's  Plays of the game show the inherent problem with using  unrelated screenshots from a variety of sources: Characters and objects look disconnected from the world they're supposed to inhabit, lighting is all over the place and the result produces its own brand of unintentional horror. That said, the ending is at least memorable:

For a game that has 2 vertical moving sticks and a ball that bounces back and fourth, I would hope that the objective of the game is pretty obvious at a glance lol
