SSD TIER LIST

Welcome to the SSD tier list.

 

SSD or Solid State Drive is a storage device containing non-volatile flash memory, used in place of hard drive because of its much greater speed. Unlike a hard drive, a solid state drive doesnt have any moving parts. It has two main components - A flash controller and  NAND flash memory chips.

This guide differentiates SSDs in different tiers based on their DWPD, sustained writes, controllers, NAND types and value for money.

Like @CircleTech i'm having my doubts here. 

sure i like a tier list, but the way this one is compiled might be very labor intensive to keep up to date.

 

Maybe it would be easier to list the nand type's and controllers in tiers? They shouldn't change as often.

I have listed it this way, because from the POV of a newbie, they are likely to not know the difference between SLC, MLC, TLC and QLC.

SX8200 Pro should be switched around with the 960 pro. There is about a 1% difference with the SX8200 Pro and the 970 pro.

SX8200 Pro = ultra high end

960 pro = high end

But 960 pro has a higher DWPD than sx8200 pro.

960 pro has a DWPD of 0.43 whereas sx8200 pro has a DWPD of 0.35.

I am also distinguishing ssds based on their nand type and endurance.

NAND type isn't that good of an indicator of endurance, for that you look at DWPD and if that is not given in that format then get the warranty length in number of days and divide the TBW by that number to get (rough) DWPD figure.

TBW: 640

Warranty: 1825 days

DWPD: 0.35 (640 / 1825)

 

When it comes to endurance DWPD really is the industry standard, NAND type doesn't matter as that is reflected in the DWPD rating and NAND OP etc. There are 3D TLC SSDs on the market with high DWPD ratings than some 3D MLC and 2D MLC.

 

Edit:

The HP EX950 is both spec sheet wise and benchmark at the same performance levels and endurance so these are equivalent. The Samsung 970 EVO is similar again but benchmarks superior to those former two mentioned.

You said you were looking at NAND type, what I'm saying is that effectively doesn't matter because DWPD is specifically the rating for endurance.

960 pro has a DWPD of 0.43 whereas sx8200 pro has a DWPD of 0.35.

I am also distinguishing ssds based on their nand type and endurance.

In fairness for a consumer drive this would be much less important as by the time your looking at them failing much cheaper / faster alternatives would be out.

Sure if your looking at enterprise scale products it makes sense but not so much for standard users.

Your ranking a faster/cheaper drive down a tier vs a competitor product because its endurance would be slightly less.

This is the issue with these tiers, they are very subjective.

The list has been updated with DWPD of all the SSDs.

For example (as above) :

Adata sx8200 Pro

TBW = 640

Warranty = 1825 days.

DWPD = 0.35 (640/1825)

This is how DWPD is calculated.

The list is now arranged according to the DWPD.

Does the mp600 have a dwpd rate set yet?

You should add the DWPD beside the ssd in the post then if your rating it on that rather than throughput?
