Arctic Preps Freezer 50 TR: A ‘0 dB’ Cooler for AMD’s Threadripper

At an event for gamers in Leipzig, Germany, Arctic demonstrated a prototype of one the industry’s first partially-passive cooling systems for AMD’s Threadripper processors. 

This cooler is passive when a PWM signal of 5% or less is detected. So am I wrong to believe that a slight hint of any load would or even just idling would trip the fans on this cooler

I don't imagine this will go over to well with some, if not most, reviewers like Linus or GN Steve. Its still months away though, probably Computex

Aren't passive coolers just fin arrays that get the airflow from the case? 

 

I dunno, probably thinking of server chassis or deployments.

Yes,completely passive is without any fans, HEATSINK ONLY

but this cooler is partially passive or it is passive when under low loads

So kind of like those SeaSonic power supplys that are silent only when you pull a certain amount of watts, okay.

The card only appears to advertise a "0db - passive mode" when under 5% load, that seems pretty accurate and in line with what many PSU brands advertise. The rest of the article appears to be Anandtech adding their impressions, not official marketing.

it'll probably look better and probably minimally louder not that it'll make much difference lol

Now this Semi nonsense comes to CPU Coolers as well...

Well, at least here it makes more sense as there is a big area.

 

But still, c'mon, use high quality fans, those last as long as the Heatsink.

And with the high quality, you also have low noise...

Arctic making semi-passive coolers isn't new, this was done since the Arctic Freezer 33 CO was out.

This was also similarly implemented in the newest Arctic P120 fans.

Going from the specsheet on that card, I'm going to take a guess and say that these will use Arctic P120 fans, which on paper, are indeed high quality. I own an Arctic F120 that is placed on my Arctic Freezer 33 eSports heatsink, and it's a fan that I would highly recommend for case fan use.

These P120 fans are made for heatsink and radiator use.

I so far not impressed, especially considering the Silver Arrow TR4 handles 320W and way less bulky than that heatsink.

Or one could just set the fan speed to zero (0) below a certain temperature threshold on the fan curve, via bios or software on any non-garbage-tier motherboard with their existing cooling solutions.

peltiers work best on custom loops so that you can get more of them in paralel and run them at peak efficiency, in tower coolers you can only use one or 2 at most which is not enough to have good results

you need two loops, a cold side loop and a hot side loop, the cold side has the cpu block, pump and the peltiers (cold side), and the hot side has another pump, the hot side of the peltiers and the radiators.

this method though much more complex allows for the use of more peltiers (more cooling), use of a lower voltage to increase efficiency.

I wonder how the system will boot when there's no CPU fan connected to the motherboard as it will get an error message..

there is a fan, it just doesn't spin when PWM < 5%
