Fornite players on iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR now get 60fps because why not? | Rip iPhone X users

AlTech

TheVerge reports that Fortnite players on iPhone XS and XR are getting a new 60fps mode so that they can run the game at 60fps.

The only IOS devices this is coming to so far are the iPhone XS, the iPhone XS Max, and the iPhone XR.

Epic Games has stated that they are working on optimizations to allow 60fps on some Android devices.

Quote

Fortnite players who are equipped with Apple’s latest iPhones now have one distinct advantage over Nintendo Switch and Android players: Fortnite on the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR now includes the option to run at 60 fps.

This means the game will run smoother and with a crisper image. That’s a higher frame rate than Nintendo Switch and Android players will get on their devices, which run Fortnite at just 30 fps.

Quote

Fortnite also runs at 60 fps on more powerful consoles, including the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One X. Android mobile devices currently cap the game at 30 fps, though an Epic Games representative says the company is “continuing to work on Android optimizations that could allow us to support a 60hz mode some time in the future.”

Honestly, given how minor the GPU improvements from the A11 to A12 were, I'm surprised they couldn't also provide 60fps for A11 powered devices.

Also, i do hope Snapdragon 835 and 845 powered Android devices get 60fps shortly even though I don't play Fortnite.

meh. this is no different than the advantage pc players have over console players, no matter what game.

I wonder if it'll be a stable 60, or if it'll run in similar fashion to the console versions.

I think it should hold 60fps if only because the game running at 60 is probably running V-sync.

good question is how this will affect battery tests........

some batterytests involve launching and playing a small bit of fortnite. this might be the end of that benchmark.

sure...

but you could even make the argument that someone playing on an iGPU and core i3 can be match against someone with a Core i9 and 1080Ti....

If they are playing in the Winter Royale ($1M) qualifiers they are also playing against PC players with 144Hz monitors and $2k PCs, so it's not that big of a deal.

Yeah but most people playing Fortnite are casuals who aren't traditional gamers xD.

inb4 someone shouts at me for calling Fortnite casual.

Winter Royale is also more skill-based

In the android closed beta the 60 fps frame limit was unlocked actually, so they probably removed them for compatibility on lower end devices. It was working fine tho

Most people that play fortnite on a phone are casual^2, so 60FPS really doesn't matter anyways. :P

That was my point.

Hardware doesn't have much to do with skill, although it certainly helps someone do better at a game.

I don't play fps games on my phone,  does it really make that much of a difference on a phone to notice 30fps as opposed to 60fps? Still not very fair if you could pay to win by getting a $1000 phone.

I would have to assume just as noticeable as on PC where in many games having a huge framerate difference is noticeable.

Apple does not use G-Sync, but they do use some form of variable refresh technology. Apple will never license from Nvidia ever again.
