Mondale got a reaction from leadeater in Synology NAS Failing - Suggestion for Copy Data Off?
I tried moving the drives from DS213j to the DS216j but it kept wanting to do setup that would erase the drives so I'm stuck trying to copy data over.

I'm afraid trying to do a migration from the directions since the NAS reboots any time there is any real activity. I've checked the CPU and RAM while copying with robocopy, it doesn't use that much resources as it's copying slow. I didn't think to check while using Teracopy so I'm not sure what that looked like.

At the moment, I'm just using robocopy with the following /E /Z /DCOPY:T /R:1 /IPG;10

As I'm writing this, it just rebooted again. I've only managed to copy 37 files in the last 5hrs so I think I'm going to order a sata to usb adapter to see if that will work.

    Moved to Storage Devices

Yes, you will be able to move the SSD to a different slot. You may have to change the boot priority order in the BIOS/UEFI to tell it to boot from the other slot, but as long as another drive with an operating system isn't installed in the other slot it should automatically find the OS drive.

Mondale reacted to Catsrules in Where do I start with networking in IT?
Honestly, at that point I would look at getting a job. After you learn the basics it really depends what you want to target, and what the company that hires you needs. Networking is really a big field you will never learn everything some point you just need to start specializing.

If you have never worked in It/Networking, depending on the market and how competitive the networking field is you might need to start at a lower entry level IT position and work you way up.

From personal experience schools are a really great place to start out, they have huge networks and are usually pretty open to hiring students. Although my experience is from 10+ years ago so I can't speak for 2022 time frame.

You could also look into volunteering at local organizations, for example I support a local Clinic with their small network. That will get you some experence you could put on your qualifications.

I also found a home lab really helped me. I learned a lot from it as well as it boasted confidence on changing settings on a network. As it can get pretty stressful when your actually charging setting on a network that is in production (almost always the case 🙂). Very different from a class room setting were there isn't really a consequence if you screw up.

My home lab was nice because it was actually a production network, if I screwed it up I could break the internet or other service and I would have family members/room mates or myself yelling at me :). So it had consequences if I did something wrong but I wasn't going to get fired or loose a company money or have employees waiting around for the system to come back online so it really wasn't very stressful.

Home Labs are not for everyone but If you do get a home lab I would really recommend making it useful, host a media server or game server. Maybe setup some VLANs make a guess network or try to block your smart TV from sending your private data back to the manufacturer. Doesn't really matter what you do but make it something that if it breaks you got to fix it.

Anyways those are some of my thoughts.

It never hurts to learn Linux but I've found  that the majority of companies I've dealt with mainly use Windows servers with maybe a few Linux sprinkled in. Also, it depends on the company structure too. Some companies have departments separated where network only does networking and System Admins only do servers, etc.

I would focus on the basics, like IP addressing, OSI modal, what is a switch, what is a router, port numbers etc... That stuff will apply everywhere doesn't matter what software your using or what ecosystem your in, it is almost always running TCP/IP on the back end and it is good to have understanding of how that works. I would assume most network courses should cover the basics. For example CCNA course cover many of the basics.

Once you know the basics it is really a matter of applying the basics to whatever software your using, figuring out the proper terminology and commands for that ecosystem.

My old high-refresh CRT. I had a MAG Industries 21" with 1600x1200 resolution that would do 85hz. Quake III Arena was something else.

A ransomeware attack that took out all PC's and servers at a company I worked for. 1100 employees couldn't work for 2 months while we got things back up and running.

My favorite right now that is 100% free is America's Army Proving Grounds. It's the only one that I know that is truly free and advertised that way with all weapons available for use.

A free to play game that is technically free as anything you would purchase is cosmetics, Quake Champions. I use this game to help keep my aim sharp as it is a fast pace arena shooter.

Mondale got a reaction from Lurick in Need an extra pair of eyes to check I haven't misunderstood something with this router
While I have never used that particular router, as long as it has the setting or option to set a primary and a failover or backup connection, it should work. Keep in mind that when it does a failover, there will be a noticeable disconnect while it rolls over to the backup connection and/or back to the primary.

Traded cards yesterday and have been putting it to the test. Right away, the TI card got better benchmarks stock versus my previous card that was overclocked. I have all weekend to test the card to make sure I want to keep it. So far, no complaints.

I worked with a hiring agency to secure a entry-level help desk position for a manufacturing company.

It didn't pay well, but the IT manager gave me autonomy. After about a year, I ended up with an entire resume page filled with tasks ranging from basic troubleshooting, to Windows Server administration, and software development. That experience got me a much higher level and better paying technical support job.

Although I don't encourage buying from scalpers, I have seen some evga 3070's over the last month on ebay for around $200 over msrp. Most sellers want double over msrp so maybe that's a deal if need a gpu and can't find one anywhere else for less?

iRacing is a realistic MMO racing simulator. There is monthly and yearly subscription options and microtransactions to purchase additional cars and tracks. There is some modding avaialble as well. There are sponsored esports events with cash prizes. VR headsets are supported. A force feedback steering wheel is highly recommended as feeling the road and wear on your tires makes a huge difference in this game. The youtube channel has training videos, highlights and full length playback of the esports and sponsored races.

YIKES, and I thought I had it rough in the weeds of my issues with Best Buy this morning...

    1. "Coming Soon" didn't switch to "Add to cart" until 3 minutes after 6:00
    2. "Due to high demand, we are requiring an extra step. Please try again" but no extra steps given. Just keep refreshing I guess...?
    3. 15 minutes later, same error but now with a prompt on "add to cart" that specifies it will auto retry.
    4. "No longer available for shipping" after eventually getting one in my cart and confirming the order in checkout. Just keep refreshing I guess...?
