As long as you shop appropriately on Black Friday you'll find tons of deals. Don't pick parts and hope they get discounted. Just decide at a higher level (eg a 1TB SSD, 16Gb of RAM, etc) and buy what's discounted.

Most NVIDIA cards from 3000 and 4000 series from board partners are limited in what they are allowed to do out of the box. It pretty much does not matter which you buy as long as the cooling solution is adequate, they will perform nearly identically.

Haha, it can be a battle. Even little things like which motherboard is the best.
I find Hardware Unboxed is great for shootouts of different hardware. I'd check them out for the best motherboard reviews based on price etc.

When they moved from DDR3 to DDR4 there was one or two boards that supported both....and hardly anyone bought them. It's just added complexity that 99% of people will never make use of. Don't hold your breath waiting for such a board to appear for DDR4/5, just pick which one you want and live with it.

I noticed in a lot of your posts that you seem to think the amount of VRAM makes a video card better or worse, but this simply isn't the case. The core of the GPU is far more important than the amount of available VRAM. Don't get caught up on 12GB vs 8GB; the 3070 is a vastly superior card to the 3060.

Good God! How did you manage to pick such horrible parts?
Haha, kidding. There are a few changes I'd make though:
Get a different cooler, that one isn't really ideal. There are quite a few budget towers that are almost as good as the top tier picks. @Caroline can usually recommend a good one. If you want cheap, then DDR4 is the way to go, though depending on the amount you're getting you can get cheap DDR5 kits that will perform better. Not sure on the motherboard cost differences though. You likely won't need the VRAM, go with the 3060Ti. If you want 12GB, I'd get a 2080Ti used, or perhaps look at the AMD offerings. Just use the thermal paste that comes with whatever cooler you get. I personally wouldn't get an MSI board, I'd lean towards Gigabyte or Asus, perhaps AsRock high end, but we all have our different experiences. I don't imagine Team Group would be that bad, it's hard to reallllly screw up an SSD. Might be worth doing some review checking though.

Psh, don't you know how the forums work? You just put a build out there, take the ridicule and sass you get for your choices, and learn over time, ending with builds that conform to the forums view of acceptable (cheap, best price to performance, fuck Intel and Nvidia (or the whipping boy of the time)) 😂

I can't really suggest anything as I have no idea what development needs, and I imagine that's important and possibly would affect him/her/it at a career level.
What I can suggest though, is:
Get a recent processor. The 11th gen is 2 years old at this point. If you can stretch the budget a bit the 3070 is a nice card. With the new Intel CPUs, I imagine a 13600k/13700k would be in the running, but maybe 5000 series AMD would be worth a look as well 🤷‍♂️

It really comes down to your long term plans. If you plan on upgrading the GPU and keeping the rest, get the Intel chips. If not, the AMD isn't as strong but will do just fine.

    Things I'd change:
5900x to 13600k. Grab a larger AIO, or a good air cooler. My vote goes for a good air cooler. Is there a reason you went mATX? You don't save much space over an ATX board, and you lose out on more slots. I'd avoid mATX honestly. Check the PSU against LTT's PSU Tier List. Make sure it's in the top 2 categories. Wait for Black Friday, buy what's discounted.

dizmo got a reaction from Dedayog in 4090 + 13900K is it worth?
While I can completely understand that stance, and if it's what you think you're more than welcome to that opinion. However the way you worded it is simply incorrect, and that's not a message you should be conveying. There are lots of people that would love to have a 4090, will buy one, and can easily afford it. To them, it's worth it. I know someone that bought 4. It's not a bad idea to purchase one unless it's beyond your financial means. Some people like the best of the best. You're not in that group, that's fine, but you should at least realize that there are people who have values other than yours.

Sure. That's your opinion, and one that's not shared by the people that enjoy said hobbies. Why are you trying to put your personal values on someone else's purchasing decision? You will always find people that buy something expensive and regret it, even if they can easily afford it. I have a friend who makes $200k+ a year, and he will still feel buyers remorse from time to time, even on smaller items. That's just that person's psyche, it doesn't make the product bad for the masses. If you really want to get down to it, why buy a PC at all? You can game on a console just fine. No need to spend all that money on a custom PC. That's basically the end point of your argument. If you don't go all the way there, then you're simply putting the goal posts exactly where you want to support your ideals. Not everyone is you. Not everyone has the same restrictions.

Your argument of money makes absolutely no sense, either. Sure, someone making $2,000 a month shouldn't buy a $1,600 GPU. I've said this many times myself. However you really need to realize that there are tons of people making substantially more than that, and for them, a $1,600 video card purchase is not at all a burden. You're arguing worth without having the correct context to apply to it.

The 4k argument makes sense if the OP is building a 4k gaming rig. Full stop. Doesn't matter if the 4090 is the only new card out or not, it will be top dog at 4k. Judging from his budget, he's looking to get the utmost of performance, and that's what the 4090 will provide. I don't think there will be price drops. AMD has already stated they can't compete with top end NVidia, and that's even if the OP wanted to go with AMD at all.

IMO you really need to take a look at how you answer posts like this. You could at least ask questions and dive a little deeper.

A lot of people on this forum seem to be price sensitive, and as a result get quite salty when people talk about high end hardware and large budgets.

Ahhh yes, fair. As long as the cables are installed correctly, then you're fine. It's where they get installed and you're not making proper contact where issues arise. If you're worried about it, it might be worth holding off for a bit to see what happens with the whole situation.

The GPU actually gives you better performance, having way too much RAM gets you absolutely nothing. Something to keep in mind. I'd drop it down to 32GB, and get a higher speed kit; this will actually get you more FPS most of the time.
That comparison doesn't really make sense. It'd make more sense if you were comparing the Corsa to a Ferrari, and the time you get there makes for a better experience...since paying more gets you better FPS. You simply cannot do the same thing with a cheaper video card; you will not get the same performance.
^ Exactly this. If I had the choice, I'd always get a CPU with an iGPU.
Interesting claim considering we haven't seen any performance metrics for it, other than the extremely limited snapshot Nvidia put out.

dizmo got a reaction from tim0901 in Nvidia 40-Series power connectors, melting, and burning.
While I agree it's poor design and requires reinforcement, there's a lot of factors that are going into play that make the connector fail.
Cards that are too large, and too close to the sides of cases, resulting in: Users bending the cables in ways that they aren't meant to be bent, resulting in: Improper contact within the connector. They need to go back and redesign the connector. I could see this resulting in a forced recall.
The connector is technically perfectly fine for what does. In the perfectly ideal situation. That's unrealistic.
I do wonder if perhaps having 90 degree connectors would help? Then you'd have far less strain on the socket itself.

Prepare for more GPU shortages lads 😉

Loads. JohnnyGuru also commented on melted connectors, and letters were sent to the body that designed it showing issues with melting.
Intel's cards were supposed to be out far sooner than they were actually released, and IIRC sat in warehouses for quite a while. That's why they hadn't adopted any new connector. I imagine we will (or would have, depending on the outcome) see them on their next series of cards.
It's not an Nvidia designed connector. It's also going to be on all AMD cards.
All connectors are only rated to 30 insertions. That's the standard.
