New build planning help

FelixSt

Budget (including currency): 1200€ (sweet spot; maybe a little more)

Country: Germany

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: 1080p gaming (1440p gaming later), Unity development, VR (Oculus Link)

Other details: Building from scratch - upgrading from Laptop (but no peripherals needed). Noob on the current products and market timing. Build is planned to happen soon but can wait if there is a reason to.

With all the new products I'm really not sure what config to go with. Currently looking towards i5-11400F + 3060ti (or spending a little more for a 3070 based system) but any recommendations appreciated.

Ever heared of Black Friday and Christmas sales?

I don't know about VR or Unity development, but 3060ti should work for 1080 and 1440p gaming, unless you want very high details / loads of fps / both (on demanding games)

Solid CPU

what do you think, @RONOTHAN## / @dizmo ? I know one of you could make a pcpartpicker, I don't trust my expertise yet, that's why I'm metioning you...

Feel free to ask any questions regarding my comments/build lists. I know a lot about PCs but not everything.

Psh, don't you know how the forums work? You just put a build out there, take the ridicule and sass you get for your choices, and learn over time, ending with builds that conform to the forums view of acceptable (cheap, best price to performance, fuck Intel and Nvidia (or the whipping boy of the time)) 😂

I can't really suggest anything as I have no idea what development needs, and I imagine that's important and possibly would affect him/her/it at a career level.

What I can suggest though, is:

  • Get a recent processor. The 11th gen is 2 years old at this point.
  • If you can stretch the budget a bit the 3070 is a nice card.

With the new Intel CPUs, I imagine a 13600k/13700k would be in the running, but maybe 5000 series AMD would be worth a look as well 🤷‍♂️

If I put build out there, there is a chance people will glance at a post that has been answered and tell themselves "welp that guy got helped already" except it would be my unprofessional recommendation that would make them buy too strong/weak CPU or a graphics card that was 10fps less than what they wanted their Cyberpunk on Ultra Ultraistic graphics to run...,

@FelixSt what application/software do you use for your Unity development?

Thanks for your honesty here. I'll have a good look on every recommendation, so please feel free to create a config. Just wanted to start unbiased here and gather some hive knowledge.

The software/game engine is actually called Unity. No specific requirements there (some 3D VR maybe). A recent GPU will most likely satisfy all needs.

Based on this, @dizmo, the development can be handled well by what he suggested,

will it be good enough for the gaming and VR?

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5700X 3.4 GHz 8-Core Processor  (€240.00 @ Mindfactory)

Total: €1334.52

It's a little over your budget, but it's what I'd get. Places you could shave a little:

  • Get rid of the 500GB SSD (43 Euro)
  • Get a lower tier version of the 6700XT (35 Euro)
  • Cheaper case (20 Euro)
  • Cheaper cooler (20 Euro)

I wouldn't get a motherboard without USB BIOS flashing.

The 5700x is slightly behind the 12600k in most tasks, but it's almost 100 Euro cheaper. The 12600 is better in games, worse in development.

The 3900x is far faster in development, but waaay slower in games. It'd also be something you'd have to source used. Not ideal with a PGA CPU.

The 5700x isn't much slower than the 5800x in development (you likely wouldn't notice), and is only every so slightly slower in games. It's cheaper than the 5800x by 20 Euro.

  • 1 month later...

Thanks for your suggestions. In the meantime I managed to purchase the R5 5600 (might be updated in the future) and XFX RX6800 QICK 319 on sale.

My current list is the following and I have a couple of questions:

  • More expensive CPU cooler Scythe Fuma over cheap Fera 5?
  • 32GB 3200 CL16 or 3600 CL18 RAM? (3600 CL16 preferred, but expensive)
    • G.Skill Ripjaws vs. Corsair Vengeance?
  • Phanteks P400A vs. NZXT H510 Flow?
  • ADATA XPG Core Reactor 650W vs. Corsair RM650x (650W should be sufficient right?)
  • Recommendations for extra case fans

What do you think of this combination? I'm open for your suggestions.
