North America is officially out of IPv4 addresses

Today, Thursday, the American Registry for Internet Numbers registered its last few addresses in its free pool. The ARIN has warned about depleting IPv4 addresses for a couple years now and have advised people to switch over to IPv6 addresses. If you're interested in getting an IPv4 address, you will be put on a waiting list, because there's literally none left to hand out, unless ARIN can get more IPv4 address from the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority.

 

If you're not into the waiting game and not into IPv6 addresses, you can buy IPv4 addresses from people on the "transfer market." IPv4 addresses on the "transfer market" will cost you anywhere from $10-$12. While North America may be out of new IPv4 addresses, other regional Internet registries still have some, but they are also running low. So basically, make the switch to IPv6 if you can.

IPv4 address spaces have been exhausted since 2010... They were pre-allocated, they just now happen to have used said pre-allocated addresses.

that just makes this a bigger problem.

No it doesn't. That's why IPv6 was created. It just needs to be used. There are enough IPv6 addresses to provide every square foot of land on Earth with 2 addresses, iitc. I've also heard enough to grant every grain of sand an address, but that seems unreal. We can thank the veterans of computer networking for not making the transition sooner. Many refuse to learn IPv6, they so happen to be the ones who refuse to retire as well. IPv6 isn't easy. It really isn't. But it's been a necessity since its inception.

It's just a different IP address. I think it's based on base-6 instead of base-4? And maybe numbers plus letters instead of just numbers? Don't quote me on that.

We could have, but all of the existing subnets are already reserved. Class A, B, and C are for residential and commercial use. Class D is a multicast range, and Class E is reserved for experimental and classroom usage. The 10.0.0.0/8 address range is unusable due to being Class A private addresses, 172.16.0.0/12 unusable for Class B private, and 192.168.0.0/16 is unusable for Class C private.

IMHO, they REALLY should have begun the transfer way back. I mean, they knew damn well that we were going to run out of IPv4 addresses soon (probably). But did they? Fuck no. Because it's all about that cha-chang cha-chang yeah the ba-bling ba-bling.

EDIT: Oh, and because of the hexadecimal nature of IPv6, we no longer need MAC addresses. They are embedded into the IPv6 address. Fuck. Yes. You wouldn't believe how much easier that becomes for a network technician.

In the case you were referring to adding another octet (i.e. xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx), that would be impossible and would require an entirely new networking stack to be created. And it would have taken longer than IPv6 has.

Dear god I hope the major corporations decide to upgrade their hardware and switch to IPv6. I'm so sick of learning about f**king subnetting (which, despite two different classes on it, still doesn't make any fucking sense)

 

If they were smart, they'd go ahead and develop whatever comes after IPv6 right now, as that will run out sooner or later as well.

I know v6 exist, i sad that thinking that givem the stubbornness of american isp, this would make adding new users to a network slower because they refuse to make the necessary changes to upgrade to v6.

Class F?

Doesn't/cannot exist. Class E uses all addresses from 240.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255. You could technically create one with classless subnetting, but that's not how you IP address is assigned. You are given a classful address.

I know v6 exist, i sad that thinking that givem the stubbornness of american isp, thos would make adding the new users to a network slower because they refuse to make the necessary changes to upgrade to v6.

It's not JUST Americans. It's not entirely the ISPs either. It is a global effort, in this case. You cannot pass blame to one country when a majority of the countries house these networking veterans. Some whom have been around since ARPANET. When you have 30 million people that don't want something to change in a small niche like this, it generally doesn't. Most companies also aren't using IPv4 internally, which means another switch (and yes, IPv6 external can be translated to IPv4 internal, but it's honestly a pain in the ass, and you can divert the same time to transitioning to IPv6 entirely). When a majority of people are uneducated, unknowing, and unaffected by something, it can be very difficult to make a major change like the transition to a fully converged IPv6 global network.

Today, Thursday, the American Registry for Internet Numbers registered its last few addresses in its free pool. The ARIN has warned about depleting IPv4 addresses for a couple years now and have advised people to switch over to IPv6 addresses. If you're interested in getting an IPv4 address, you will be put on a waiting list, because there's literally none left to hand out, unless ARIN can get more IPv4 address from the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority.

 

If you're not into the waiting game and not into IPv6 addresses, you can buy IPv4 addresses from people on the "transfer market." IPv4 addresses on the "transfer market" will cost you anywhere from $10-$12. While North America may be out of new IPv4 addresses, other regional Internet registries still have some, but they are also running low. So basically, make the switch to IPv6 if you can.

Doesn't/cannot exist. Class E uses all addresses from 240.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255. You could technically create one with classless subnetting, but that's not how you IP address is assigned. You are given a classful address.

Question. Why are the address values limited at 255? Suspiciously 255  = 28-1
