Fury X price might be affected by a Cooler Master suit vs Asetek

Over the past number of year Asetek has been hunting down all of those who would infringe on their liquid cooling patents, having already successfully taken a large number of all in one liquid coolers out of the US market, most notably Swiftech's H220 liquid cooler. 

 

In a very recent case against Cooler Master for their use of a coldplate mounted liquid cooling loop, a patented Asetek design, Cooler Master was told by a US district court jury that they must pay a 14.5% royalty fee on all Cooler Master Liquid coolers sold in the US. 

 

Cooler Master demanded that a new trail be carried out and that a judgement be made a matter of law by a Judge, and was met by an increased royalty fee of  25.375%, which will affect all infringing products beginning January 1st. Cooler Master still have the ability to appeal this decision. 

 

Right now this ruling will affect a wide range of products which includes the following cooler Master all-in-one liquid coolers,

 

- Seidon 120V

- Seidon 120V Plus

- Seidon 120M

- Seidon 120XL

- Nepton 140XL

- Seidon 240M

- Glacer 240L

- Nepton 280L

nothing but bad news for AMD, they can't seem to catch a moment of peace and quiet

ps: does anyone know the exact CM model on Fury X?

the unit on Fury X is a similar model with Seidon 120V, unit that is included in the injunction

it was speculated that the contract would be for manufacturing the AIOs for the Fury X; but something happened and the contract went to Cooler Master instead

now, the guess on my part is that Asetek got really pissed by AMD's move and to "hurt" them indirectly, they launched a law suit against CM

the really interesting bit is this:

The cooler on the Fury X is very similar to the Seidon 120V (which is part of the successful injunction). This means it could fall under the injunction and might also be banned.

There is that vrm cooling thing on the cooler though. So it can't be any of those models. Does it still affect?

Somebody needs to just outsmart and cheat the fucking broken patent system right back: Just buy out and dissolve asetek.

CoolerMaster sub-contracted some company from Asia afaik...

 

Still I don't understand these patents, can you patent a car saying that it has an engine on four wheel chasis and then sue everyone like ford, bmw, nissan for making a four wheel combustion engine vechicle even though that is the only and most efficient way that any sensible engineer will come up with independently from other companies?

Cooler Master CANNOT ask AMD for more money, if the contract has been made with any common sense at all. The way this should work is, AMD signs a contract with CM to buy large batches of their select cooler at a fixed price; CM then commits to providing said cooler in the quantities needed by AMD. Altering the price would go against a similar contract.

 

It's also worth pointing out that the coolers used in the fury x have a custom plate design, not necessarily similar to the usual cpu plate - meaning it is conceivable that these models do not in fact infringe the patent.

I don't see how you can change a AIO cooler that much. They are pretty much the same (difference here and there) but all run water over the core and memory and pump it to a radiator.

In a very recent case against Cooler Master for their use of a coldplate mounted liquid cooling loop, a patented Asetek design, Cooler Master was told by a US district court jury that they must pay a 14.5% royalty fee on all Cooler Master Liquid coolers sold in the US.

You're likely correct. The AIO units for the FuryX were likely sold to AMD in bulk up front. The court ruling doesn't retroactively pinch CM for past sales.
