(Debunked) AMD Fury X production limited to 30,000 units in 2015.

This is more than likely an excuse for low yields.

 

Well apparently this entire article in the OP is nothing more than fud:

 

One persistent rumor we’ve heard about HBM yields and costs, we can thankfully debunk. It’s been bandied about that AMD would face a crippling cost structure in the wake of the GTX 980 Ti’s debut a few weeks ago, due to poor yields or costs for High Bandwidth Memory (HBM). In reality, HBM has been on sale for quite some time, as evidenced in this memory databook from Hynix, which was released in Q3 2014. It shows two types of HBM as already available — a 128GB/s, 1.0Gbps component and a 128GB/s, 0.8Gbps component, both already available in the same 4Hi stack that AMD is using for Fiji.

Su would not comment on when we would see other HBM implementations, nor on which products, but she said that there are neither production nor technology limitations, just decisions to be made "based on the company's overall product roadmap, and individual market decisions."

Production costs are usually included in the final cost of the card. I'm pretty sure the GCN architecture is pretty streamlined at this point as far as drivers go. Of course they need tweaks and modifications but it's not like they are ditching GCN and using an entirely new architecture.

here's the kicker - AMD fans wish that Fury will be cheap

but that can't happen, if it does, the return will be marginal; and they still need to take into account software team that has drivers to release for W7/8/10 on top of existing GPUs and on top of existing problems that they still haven't fixed

 

if Fury will be expensive, that 4Gb of VRAM is like a kick in the nuts  :unsure: for AMD's fans

 

also, not every video card manufactured is 100% issue free - RMAs will start to be taken in

Who is buying the Fury or Fury X for 100% without seeing official benchmarks is what I wanna know.

 

Why?   Because people bought the Titan X without caring about the official benchmarks as far as I know.

 

They heard Titan X, fastest card...Time to benchmark that beotch and have fun....heck I'll buy 2 for the fun of it.

I do not think the Fury will be cheap I think it will be pretty expensive because AMD cannot lose profit from terrible margins anymore.

 

I think the 4GB of memory is going to be pretty catastrophic in the end for most people. I cannot see who thought it was a good idea to offer a top tier god card with only 4GB of video memory, then have your second best card 390X with 8GB of video memory. The whole point in spending a lot of money on a card is for it to last a while, while the Fury might be powerful, I can see the 4GB of VRAM becoming an issue in the near future. Which kind of negates the fact of spending a lot of money on a card in the first place if you plan on replacing it within a year.

 

Yes of course those numbers aren't an exact replica of profits that will occur from video card sales, but it's just to show how much they can be making even with a 40-60% profit margin and electronics tend to be on the higher end of that figure.

30000 units? I didn't think the market for top end cards like Titan X or AMD Fury (or Titan Z or 295x2) was even that large.

Costs are irrelevant to the revenue numbers. Profit is where it matters, but we don't have enough information to have any idea of the profit AMD would make on these things.

It's not the first time Hynix has had a truly monumental screwup. Given how long HMC has been out and shipping to products in the HPC space (primarily Oracle Sparc systems), it looks like Micron is still ever a worthy competitor.

HMC is proving to be the superior solution as it turns out. The problem for Nvidia is Intel and Oracle have ordered so much of it (430 million units is the latest estimate between Sparc, Knight's Landing, and Micron's "The Machine") that Micron's production capacity is practically saturated for the next two years.

 

Here's the thing everyone around here tends to forget: Micron was the diamond standard for DRAM for a very long time before Hynix, and Micron has far more experience. I can see why Hynix had to go to 2.5D instead of making the direct jump to 3D that Micron did. Micron decided to sacrifice a little bandwidth and tight timing on the opening spins of the product, but MCDRAM (the semi-custom HMC going into Knight's Landing) is only 0.05 volts more expensive than HBM 2.0 while simultaneously having 15% more bandwidth per pin and lower latency. 

 

Nvidia was forced to abandon HMC. It didn't exactly choose to, and now it seems Hynix has met its first real match in years. This should be one interesting year.

What year and model? Micron builds some RAM for rock-solid stability and others for overclocking. It's not like Hynix where everything must overclock even at the sacrifice of all else (hence Hynix RAM being severely unpopular in the HPC world).

I don't know off the top of my head so i'll have to find it, but I used it when I was running my K6-2 500 on a 140MHz FSB (so about 1998-1999 going by the CPU).

It may not be on domestic products but it has been on Intel's road map since 2013 and is currently on knights landing. I don't think it's development ever had issues, there are multiple explanations why nvidia aren't using it.

Of course HMC isn't available in consumer products yet. There's exactly one maker who currently can only supply the HPC space anyway. Infiniband isn't really in any consumer products either, yet it's universally better than Ethernet. None but the ignorant would argue otherwise.

Yes they are. Sparc systems use it specifically for high-bandwidth memory for the integrated accelerators used (usually Xilinx FPGAs), though moreover HMC was designed with more functionality in mind, such as being useable as a cache, as volatile transactional memory, or as a little of both. HMC is built for what Nvidia wants and more. It's more than ready, as made clear by Intel's massive order of it for specific use in a GPU-like compute accelerator (with additional functionality and performance in workloads which pure GPUs will never achieve). Nvidia's only problem was being at the back of the line.

 

Seriously people, it's not that hard.
