WAN Show is too damn quiet

I would like to make a little complain about WAN Show audio. Audio levels are just too low, but sometimes, especially when @Slick is laughing, it is wayyy to loud and not comfortable to listen, can you do something about it? :/ Maybe if enough peps agree with me, someone like @LinusTech or @nicklmg will notice. cheers !

they really need an audio guy on the team.. they've done vareous types of "something" about it in the past, but over time it tends to "undo" itself.

It is sad, that with all that gear they can't set it up properly :/

lavalier microphone and audio compressor would do the job

so they need to hire one, or learn how to do it properly ? it is not rocket science, on this level eveything should be at least on a decent level.

I never understand what people are talking about when they complain about WAN show audio. Sure, there have been a few times when maybe it was out of sync, or they forgot to turn on the mic, but I have watched every wan show since they started and I've never had an issue. 

 

You guys must have some funky setups because I don't know what your all complaining about

They don't have to be.

 

At one point, I think it was Focusrite gave them the gear and even sent someone around to set it up for them. All they had to do was NOT TOUCH IT. Of course, Linus took it apart shortly after... because reasons.

Digital sound has a finite range that is represented. Generally you want it to be loud enough for use but not so loud you reach the limit and clip, causing distortion. The other way, if you're too quiet you introduce quantisation noise. Plus, not every has an amp with infinite range to try and bring it up to normal, and you run the risk of normal level sounds blowing your ears off once you have turned it up.

 

Recent Wan shows I'd rate as low side of normal but ok. Earlier in the year they had a period when it was way too low. I had to download it, stick over 20dB gain on it to get it remotely near normal. That's not just a bit quiet, it is totally wrong. Even if they mess up the live broadcast, they really should fix it in post for the uploaded version.

i listen to wan show in my car via fm transmitter and when I set decent level to hear anything introduces a lot of white noise, when google voice from maps kicks in, I bleed from my ears

Honestly the best audio was back in the house. They are using a condenser mic for more than one person that's far away. They either need everyone to use a mic or use a different mic

Linus has talked about them hiring producer and joked about it. At one point, I think it was Focusrite gave them the gear and even sent someone around to set it up for them. All they had to do was NOT TOUCH IT. Of course, Linus took it apart shortly after... because reasons.

Digital sound has a finite range that is represented. Generally you want it to be loud enough for use but not so loud you reach the limit and clip, causing distortion. The other way, if you're too quiet you introduce quantisation noise. Plus, not every has an amp with infinite range to try and bring it up to normal, and you run the risk of normal level sounds blowing your ears off once you have turned it up.

 

Recent Wan shows I'd rate as low side of normal but ok. Earlier in the year they had a period when it was way too low. I had to download it, stick over 20dB gain on it to get it remotely near normal. That's not just a bit quiet, it is totally wrong. Even if they mess up the live broadcast, they really should fix it in post for the uploaded version.

Better than whining about it every week on forums? They are aware. We don't even need to tag them to this post. But its more about what I said in earlier post. At this point Linus is not considering WAN to be high priority when making investments. The current audio system they have is there only because they got sponsored. And they F-d it up when they made set to be in the middle of path to storage are at the other unit.

 

They would need to re-intent show to make things better. Create whole dedicated set for livestreams, fix concept of the show itself and appoint a person to monitor stream output so that hosts don't need to have backward moments checking if everything is working. Its not even that hard as they already do pretty decent live builds and teardowns time to time. With "producer" (Colton or Nick usually) who read chat and pass it forward and working setup (Anthony or Jake has been seen behind it), like during MSI Dragon unboxing.

sure, those live streams run by @nicklmg are always nice, without issues, using off-camera gear is not in any sponsor's intrest, what it would bring to them? There is already a dedicated set and server just for streaming, only audio needs tweaking, I would love to hear any official info from any LMG staff... @GabenJr @LinusTech

Its not hard to set it up, its hard to get it right though. 

The amount of hours that I spent playing with a sound desk to get actors voices to sound natural makes me cry. Many people in the theatre / music industry call sound black magic, unless you understand how it works its very hard to learn. Them having a mixture of hosts, and only one mic means that you can't calibrate the settings to the person, it has to be a general setting

Some of their levels are pretty off, their intro needs to be tuned down, I don't know what the setup for the desk is though, if they have all of the stuff for the stream PC going into one XLR to the desk, or if they have separated out the channels. 

Also the bass pot needs to be tuned down a bit for the intro, something is not right with that.

There is alot more to complain about with ltt, a lot more. But the audio people can deal with, its the yt'ers who upload a video and only have one side going. Had a few of them last night on the tv.

as I said, on my PC with headphones and good speakers/audio setup it is not an issue, but in my car where audio is worse, it brings a lot of noise and is impractical to listen

Ive complained about the audio-levels on the WAN-show several times in the past. It's annoying to have to crank the volume up a lot so I can hear them, because then all the other sounds on my PC are too loud. I don't have to crank volume up for any other Youtube-videos, they're all just fine and it's just the WAN-show that's way too quiet.
