Apple to replace unresponsive iPhone X screens for free

Have you or a loved one been diagnosed with an unresponsive touchscreen? If so you may be entitled to financial compensation :P jk, but Apple will replace your screen for you.

If you've had problems with the touch responsiveness of your iPhone X's display, you may be in luck. According to a support document, Apple identified a problem with some iPhone X devices that may cause a component of the display module to fail. The company has now launched a program to replace affected screens for free.

 

Apple claims that failed display components have caused touch response issues on some iPhone X devices. Part, or all, of the affected displays may not respond to touch input, or, in some cases, they may only respond intermittently. In other instances, displays react to touch even when they have not been touched.

Seeing as this is a issue with a module on the display, the repair is fairly simple and requires only a screw driver and a water resistant gasket and your display is fixed. Normally for accidental damage or out of warranty coverage, replacing an iPhone X display would cost $280

Under the repair program, users can go to Apple or to an authorized service provider to get an iPhone X examined. If they verify that the device is eligible for the repair, the display module will be replaced free of charge.

 

The repair program covers affected iPhone X devices for three years after the initial sale date. Those who may have already paid to repair their iPhone X for a similar problem may be able to get a refund for the amount spent on the repair if the problem is determined to be covered under this new program.

Don't worry if you have an iPhone X and it isn't showing any issues right now, your phone will have coverage under this program for 3 years after the date of purchase. 

 

It is unknown how many devices are effected or if this issue was ever resolved in the Xs line

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

That type of coverage is pretty typical actually. Almost all their Mac programs are the same with 3 years of coverage after the initial date of purchase.

Remember a time where consumer electronics weren't like cars where there would be a Service Bulletin published every few months? Yea, those were the days. Again, are they just flexing their customer service standards here rather than trying to make a robust product? Figures why they spent an hour trying to sell us their products and enterprise support during a company wide teleconference... a company where on site warranty work is preferred for data security and so we don't have to pay someone to wait an hour at the Apple store.

They probably need a bit of PR boost in their customer service department to be fair.

I could reply with what I've said in the past repeating myself about quality or whatnot, but really I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case. It's still better for the consumer anyway, I guess less choice, but hey, its free and a bit of support in some form for a few more years. A $1000 phone very nice to see this, even if it is just a PR move or to take away competition. Can't put Apple down for doing something good, even if it is because they messed up.

Well, nice.

 

Now, for the obligatory anti-Apple cinicism:

it would be less nice if it turned out that some design flaw somewhere else in the phone was causing these screens to die, in which case the new screens would be on a timer and by the time they die again your phone would be out of warranty. It wouldn't be the first time they dismiss an issue by "addressing" the symptoms and not the cause.

I cant say its a bad thing. 3rd parties offer a cheaper way to repair your device. But if the manufacture offers to do it for free then a win win.

It's not really that much cheaper when you consider with every repair your warranty for that repaired part gets extended by a year or two depending on country. I just prefer the security of the Apple warranty rather than just one store, it means while I'm on holiday and my computer or phone breaks I can just walk into any Apple store and get it done. If its way cheaper and you don't mind going back there then thats all good though. Just remember I live in the butt of the world, so its more expensive to get it done at a third party store where I live.

its kinda interesting that Apple (or other store/manufacturer) should be covering this for free 5 years after purschase for free in my country.

 

or at least "covering" it in the sence i can complain about a manufacturer defect up to 5 years after purchase and the place i bought it at should offer me a new(or equivelent) product or a repair for free. this i for every product between 2 and 5 years, also phones and laptops are supposed to last at least 5 years. 

 

there are a few things to remember but as long as it isnt caused by the user you can do that. frickin sweet.

It all depends on what you need fixed. I mean does warranty matter when you can either fix the back glass for $80 or send it to apple to fix it for $500, essentially half the price of the phone. I do get what you mean though but cost differences still matter, warranty or not.

Would my music randomly pausing only if the phone is upside down and against my leg walking be this issue? I know it isn't thinking I tapped the display as if you don't hold the phone face up it won't turn on

Not sure where you got $500 from, when you can just ask to replace the whole phone for that. I can only speak from my own experience of course, which was costing $150 to replace an iPhone. 6 screen from a third party, and when I broke my iPhone 7 with water damage, I took it to the Apple Store in Brisbane, and was charged only $350 for an entire new phone - which is nice as I have the 256GB model. Maybe I'm wrong and it does cost $500 to fix for a glass back, but I doubt it, and if you have AppleCare, accidental damage is covered.

Yeah the option of having a 3rd party fix is important too if you keep your phone after the warranty expires, and not everyone has Apple stores close by.

...is how they repaired the last hardware fault their own design team caused I'd be more inclined to trust the third party repair centre than Apple. Yes that is a piece of rubber stuck to the chip to press it into the board.

 

Btw this picture doesn't show the old crusty solder that hasn't even been touched up despite being the reason why the component is lifting from the board in the first place or the huge section of the board that's charred because Apple set the reflow station temp to high to get boards reflowed quicker.

Well thats the US. Gotta say companies there are absolutely awful at any rate. Never had to pay that much to fix my phone have to say.

The cost of replacing the X's back glass is $549 from apple if you dont buy apple care. Its why 3rd party repairs are getting so much traction. Its stupid seeing as that is over half the cost of the phone.

It is ridiculous, but people will pay that. Apple will charge what people will pay. Not sure whether I'm defending Apple here, or the wallets of the consumers or just plain how silly some people in the US are. All depends on competition and publicity really.

They will and its more the people's fault than Apple's. The more people are willing to pay a business for things, the more businesses with charge their customers. 

 

This is still a good move on Apple's part whether I like it or not.
