Navi looks promising!!

So we all knew the vega launch with even the frontier edition was not revolutionary, but this looks promising. According to their sources, Vega was incomplete, it was supposed to have AI but due to some technical difficulties it could not be completed. There are many assumptions regarding AMD's  successful 7nm chipsets but it was only assumed of cpu, but it looks like there are 7nm navi GPUs also coming next CES.

In my opinion, next year is interesting for GPUs because of the downfall of the mining. and if priced right, the absence of of RTX cores will very affordable but also good. Lets wait and watch.

This brings up a good point. If Nvidia prices are all because of RTX, then AMD can manage some non-ray tracing competition and hopefully we can forget about Vega 64 and FE soon

Seeing as dumping an extra 120W in a VEGA56 makes it beat a 2070 it just looks like AMD didn't have time to refine the design enough to cut down power consumption as a card drawing 350W is not very marketable

I really don't have a lot of hope for this, I just hope whatever they throw out there can compete with nvidia in the mid or mid-high tier. They're getting cocky with pricing.

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

At best we'll see an engineering sample at CES. Anything else would mean the time table having been moved up significantly.

 

What does AI mean in this context? That's such a vague claim. And nothing to back it up.

 

The "lack of AI" had no bearing on the disappointing Vega nor have I heard of it being in the cards beyond RPM which does work.

the only limiting factor on Vega, past cards and future cards is GCN

if they make Navi GCN its a bust dont even bother or hype it even on 7nm they will barely get close to nvidia pascal for a few months then nvidia releases RTX 3080/ti on 7nm with more CUDA's and better ipc, higher clock and 100Watt less power than AMD

they simply have too much money now, AMD will not be able to compete ever,  unless they pull a Zen move for GPU's, but GPU's already have scalability so MCM is not the issues or solution here, they need to get rid of HBM in desktop cards and go to GDDR6, and get rid of GCN bring new arch

I'll take a wild guess here: Navi will probably launch, at least at first, for mid-range cards only and it will be a great card for the money and probably overtake the 2060 on certain games.

The power won't be that bad for our modern PSUs and low power consumption of modern rigs helps anyway. Probably a crappy blower design but we should "wait for the AIB models anyway" and the conclusion is that this is a very nice deal specially for people who want to enjoy Freesync.

Basically just copy/paste the general comments for every single AMD GPU release for the past what, 5 years?

EDIT: Oh shit I forgot! This time AMD will promise they will release really mature drivers on launch for real this time! When that doesn't happens most people will remind us that AMD cards performance will eventually get a lot better and more competitive for the games in which it doesn't wins or ties right now (Which are always the minority but then somebody will remind us about something on Frostbyte that runs really good on AMD as if that makes up for it)

AMD could have 10 generations of 'Ryzens' and not come even *close* to what nVidia have now, they are just too embedded, too much cash and seen as THE PC gaming company to go too when you need a card/upgrade.

as long as amd doesn't make a 50+ cu card they can make a very good card, vega suffers from the lack of scalling at the very top of gcn's configuration, but when running with less Cus it can be quite good, right now they are many times limited by pixel fill rate (partly due to their lower clocks) so if they can bring those clocks higher they can have a great card on their hands. (there were some rumors not too long ago about amd moving some engineers to the radeon side with the intent of increasing the clock speeds significantly, and then we have the vega 12 clock value for linux which is quite high (1900s).

a 290x on the latest revision would be quite a good card, 40 Cus with 64 rops to me seems like the perfect middle ground for gcn

Well, Navi is supposed to be last of GCN so we'll see where it lands. 7nm node jump will definitely help in every regard. 

There were rumors that 7nm Vega instinct on 7nm is quite a bit faster than Vanilla one. So Navi is to be improvement overall over it and 7nm along should push performance high enough. 

So hopefully next flagship to succeed RX Vega is more jump in performance than regular.
