AMD and AM4, how long?

How long do you guys think AMD is going to support the AM4 socket?

Looks like it was revealed in December 2016, so until 2020.

Isn't it so nice how these increments all match up so well? Also I hope they do the same thing where there's overlap of socket compatibility and some am4 CPUs work with am5 motherboards and come versa, like the old am3/am3+ days. I bet some people would like to use their ryzen 5 2600 with ddr5 and such

maybe they'll put Bulldozer on AM5 for BIOS update services as well :P

Wouldn't they need a memory controllers that supported ddr5?

What I like about AMD , is the fact that you can upgrade the CPU keep you old MB , wait until you get cash, then upgrade the MB.

 

You can not do that with Intel

Well 6th gen Intel had boards that support ddr3 so I assume the IMC should be able to handle it

AM5. i dont see them chaning naming sceme. it also just alignes with a lot of new tech. would be dumb to call it am4+

The IMC needs specific considerations to use different memory technologies.

 

AM2+/AM3 (DDR2/DDR3) interoperability only applied to very specific CPUs.  AM3/AM3+ were both DDR3.

well. AMD stated 4 gens of CPUs i believe. so Ryzen 4000 unless they had a sudden change of mind

The difference is that 6th gen Intel came after ddr3 so supporting it in the controller would be easy if they designed it that way. To get a cpu to support ddr5 when it was created prior to the release of ddr5 is not that likely tbh.

Yep. Also, while unlikely, it's not impossible that - if there's demand - there may be further support for the AM4 slot even past 2020. AM4 is a big cash cow for them right now, so it's not totally unimaginable that they may support it in some way even after AM5 rolls out.

AMD says at least until 2020. They may continue to produce processors after that date on socket AM4 or may not.

Keep in mind you can still buy am3+ motherboards using the 760g chipset which was launched around 2009 and you can still buy socket AM3+ processors which would run on these boards.

 

In 2020, we'll have pci-e 4 (double the speed of current pci-e 3) and we'll have DDR6 ( it's unlikely to have ddr5 because it would just cause confusion with gddr5 and gddr5x for video cards) and we'll have usb 3.2 (20gbps) or even higher well established and sata may eventually be removed from boards

You can buy all of that old crap because it is backstock that never sold when it was new.

I will be going with AMD for my next comp. The question is, when is the next generation of AMD CPU beyond 2700x coming out.  Or Should I simply buy now and not wait.

GIGABYTE GA-78LMT-USB3 R2 was launched around a year ago, see Nov. 2017 for the initial bios date.

There is still demand for am3+ boards and 760g is used for its integrated graphics and it's still available.
