Apple's Explanation:

 

TLDR: Apple has released an update to High Sierra that should help or completely alleviate the atrocious throttling issues that the 15" Pro's have been facing but also says it should help the 13" Pro's as well. From what Apple is saying, it seems that this was either a mistake that was not caught in time for release. Apple themselves started to look into this issue after David Lee's video about his 15" Pro. They contacted Lee so they could replicate his workflow and this is the result of their findings.

 

Still incredibly frustrating for anyone who did buy these machines. This is something that should have been caught before a wide release like this. Hopefully reviewers update their reviews to better show the product and it's potential performance.

Dude, the only thing they can do is undervolt and limit the voltage. The heatsinks and VRMs will not miraculously appear in your notebook, even though for that price, that would be impressive.

It was VRM cooling that was the problem, not the VRM.

Louis demonstrated a way to get a performance increase with an edit to the kernel. An update like that is probably whats happening. It's a 20% boost.

Or lowers voltages if they're higher than need be, or raises fan curves, or hell it could even be that the power delivery system wasnt splitting the load properly. There are a lot of softwares/firmware fixes that can be pushed that could alleviate the problem.

 

Why not wait to see actual results before talking out of your ass.

92c running what appears to be some sort of 4k render in Final Cut(?). Running stably at 0.1GHz below the i9's base frequency. It's not tanking completely like before, but this update merely shows how poor the thermal design of this laptop really is, that it can't maintain the CPU's base frequency doing an intensive task. So much for a 'pro' device.

Huh. It is better, they basically turned the i9 into i7 because it can not boost over Base Clock at heavy usage. Congratulations. :D

Right? Also Macbook users can forget about turboboost towards 4 GHz. They just choked a voltage a bit and that's it.

A software update can change physics? It's simple, they don't have the needed cooling for an i9.

Yeah... that sounded extremely fishy to me too. You can't fix undersized VRMs with a firmware update. Maybe all this did is activate some power management feature, I doubt we'll see better performance than with the power limiting tweak.

It's early to say what exactly they did but I think they either 1) put in a power limit like every other manufacturer on the planet or 2) nerfed turbo boost.

What I think is more surprising in this news is not the fact that Apple is addressing this thermal throttling problem (Apple I think has been pretty good about fixing extreme glaring issues with their products) Apple allegedly worked directly with a tech youtuber to solve the problem. Apple has like never worked with the press of tech-tubers when it comes to their products...

Right yeah I agree the cooling solution fucking sucks. No disagreement at all however the update really does seem to have helped a fair bit.
