Security researcher Matthew Hickey rolled back his claim that he successfully broke the passcode limit of iOS 11.3

"The [passcodes] don't always go to the [secure enclave processor] in some instances -- due to pocket dialing [or] overly fast inputs -- so although it 'looks' like pins are being tested they aren't always sent and so they don't count, the devices register less counts than visible," he tweeted.

Hickey credited Stefan Esser for his help.

 

"I went back to double check all code and testing," said Hickey in a message Saturday. "When I sent codes to the phone, it appears that 20 or more are entered but in reality its only ever sending four or five pins to be checked."

 

Apple is rolling out a new feature, called USB Restricted Mode, in its upcoming iOS 12 update, which is said to make it far more difficult for police or hackers to get access to a person's device -- and their data.

Remember this? It turns out to be fake news.

So every iPhone and iPad owner with devices still in iOS 11.3 should feel safer now. If incorrect passcode attempts don't always go to the Secure Enclave, it means that incorrect passcodes are discarded. But hey I commend Hickey for admitting that he's wrong. In the meantime, those security guys at Apple can breathe a little more and somehow everyone is putting pressure on them because they got into FBI especially James Comey's nerves way back in 2014 and they're at a constant race against Grayshift who claims they've defeated iOS 12's USB Restricted Mode.

Now, remember that Matthew Hickey is the same guy who made a proof of concept way to deliver a malware, especially a ransomware payload to a Windows 10S device by taking advantage of legacy Macros. If I were Apple, I'd hire the best guys in penetration testing and open up their bug bounty to everyone since at the moment, their bug bounty is an invite only and the payouts are a bit low compared to others.

But just as always, timely software updates for more than two years is something iOS users have been enjoying for years and somehow I think the iPhone has become the new Blackberry especially for businesses and corporate us.

Lol yeah Apple might be hated for a closed ecosystem and high prices but the security that comes with it is unmatched. No need for DRM if Apple reads all your code anyways. I'm not a sheep it's simply a fact iPhone have better security

Although to be fair knee-jerk reactions in the forum are quite common with bad press of big tech companies like Intel, AMD, Microsoft, Google and especially Apple.

 

I wonder if Linus considered adding an algorithm to the forum in order to predict reaction of members with every news article posted and they can do it Cambridge Analytica style.

I think it's just par for the course discussion, neither the original claim nor this thread has gotten any traction beyond a few people (somewhat ironically) trying to use it to prove an over represented hatred for apple.  I mean, look at the DOTA cheating thread, it's already up to 3 pages, they are discussing what constitutes cheating in a game.  I don't think that constitutes a knee jerk reaction.

 

People like to thrash out their ideals and opinions, I really don't think any one company or product is over represented.
