We could also start bashing Apple ;-)

Apple is not doing shit like MS. They have made their own ecosystem and do not try to fuck with others. They do not touch other companies and they do not want to be touched by others.

MS on the other hand is trying to fuck with everyones lives. They can't make their own OS good enough so they put others OS inside their OS :D They bought Skype and destroyed it. They made shittiest OS ever Windows 10. They made the worst modern browser EDGE and try to make us believe it's the best. They show us fucking false battery tests where edge wins by far. They show us speedtests which are false tests too. Apple does not do that shit. They have their own customers which are happy with apple ecosystem and no matter what (3.5 jack removal, making phones which bend, killing old phones, making old phones slower, removing shitload of ports and selling them individualy as dongles and so on) they are and always will be buying apple product. That's why Apple is the most valuable company i think it's more then 900 Billion $. Not MS or Google but Apple!

Do not get me wrong i hate Apple! But i hate MS more then Apple. My hatred list goes like this.

1 MS

2 Google

3 FB

4 Canonical

5 Apple

You seen to think that none of these companies are in direct competition with MS, and are not reading their T&C and pondering over their ability to control or influence GitHub. A rival company owning your service provider is not really desirable, unless you can leverage that for a mutual benefit.

[One of the companies I worked for, would spit in the direction of competitors, but for those providing a service, would sell their left kidney to get a piece of the pie, and sometimes we did more turnover+profit through them, than we did directly. And this was a national retail company].

It is actually very common for companies to be using services from rivals, even being beholden to them.  Apple have been reliant on MS for software since the original mac and reliant on Samsung for ram and screens.  Google have a strong apple ecosystem in place even though they have android and most of their employees can use Linux.  I am sure there are many more examples out there.    Most businesses don't make changes like this overnight, most business will actually take weeks to decide if a service provider change is necessary or beneficial even when the current SP becomes owned by a rival.

You mean like patent existing products and try to sue for it? Nah they've never done that.

All companies are as evil as all other companies, this discussion should not be about one is better than the other or the actions of one excuse the other, it should be about the facts as we know them and the facts only.

Both tests were repeatable. The final numbers weren't the exact same, but the differences were within margin of error.

No, they didn't.

They own most of the desktop OS market. The OS is, and has been, more than good enough.

Really? Really? So a business cannot make a decision unless it takes weeks, and a person cannot make decisions based on morals? Ok. Thanks. Bye.

Yes, generally it does.  Business does not operate on emotions.  Successful business considers all the ramifications of any move before making it.   I'm guessing you haven't had much experience with business?

Again with the insults...

1) Why do you assume these are decisions based on emotions rather than, for example, risk analysis?

2) How do you know the developers moving from Github hasn't already considered all the ramifications?

Quite a few things bug me with MS having control over GH itself:

MS could easily spin this in favor of Azure, windows, VS, and any other of 'their' products that they would like to.

MS stealing code from private repos of other companies.

MS using it as a data-mine.

MS moving free features behind paywalls.

In addition, this gives MS control over Atom, which they could potentially discontinue in favor of VS Code.

It also gives MS control over Electron, which could lead to things such as windows support being prioritized or made exclusive.

All around I really don't like were this is going, Nadella's post mentioning "opportunities for new improvements," to the platform and other vague things doesn't help much either.

I've already started moving from GH, all of my personal stuff is on gitlab now.

I sincerely hope all goes well for GH and that MS treats it well, but I don't want to take any chances.

what insults?  Anyone with experience in business knows that decisions like the ones I am talking about don't occur in 24 hours. If you think you can analyze the ramifications of a takeover like this in 24 hours then you have no idea.  That is not an insult that is just reality. Sorry you are so easily offended.

Canonical? Why?

If I can guess, Ubuntu is kind of like the Windows 10 of Linux. Most Linux distributions' main emphasis is open source and privacy. While Ubuntu does provide a great user-friendly experience for first-time Linux users (imo), the idea of having a corporation (Canonical) controlling a distribution kind of sets it apart from other Linux distributions in a negative manner. Before (and I'm not sure if they still do this since they switched to GNOME instead of Unity), they had Amazon search results in their desktop environment, giving the user a lesser sense of privacy, and who knows what their doing with that data. Sounds kind of Microsoft-y already. They've also made a few controversial moves in the past that I'm not going to list.

There's also Red Hat that controls the RHEL distribution, but they're much more contributive towards the Linux community. For example, CentOS (another Linux distribution) was using Red Hat's source code to build their own distribution and Red Hat was basically like "Hey, we'll help you guys out".

I really don't know why I typed this much :P

You said that the ones moving are only doing it because of emotional reasons, that they haven't thought it through. You're dismissing their actions as irrational through insults.

I'm guessing you haven't had much experience with development? This really isn't a hard decision to make. And by that I mean, it is not at all a complicated thing to do, and has essentially no impact whatsoever on the workflow. It's about as complex as cleaning the coffee machine in the cafeteria.

And yes, some of them are most likely doing it from "emotional" reasons (if you think despise stemming from a history of abuse is purely emotional and not risk avoidance), but certainly not all of them are.

By the way, it's been 5 days since rumors about Microsoft buying Github surfaced. So what you refer to as "24 hours" is more like 120 hours at the time of writing.

If you follow the discussion back you'll see I made that post within 12 hours of the thread going up (2 days ago) which claimed that was transfers in the last 24 hours.   I was literally speaking to the news that these all occurred within 24 hours of the acquisition being made public.

Not too sure why you think it is an insult to call a spade a spade.  But if I were you I would stop throwing stones in your glass house.
