Update: More information reveals that over 150k projects have since moved to GL following GH MS purchase

GitLabs are having a wonderful day today, first they confirmed that over the past week over 50'000 projects ditched GitHub(I'll refer to them as Gh)  and they changed over to GitLab (I'll refer to them as GL) and they have also confirmed a partnership agreement with Apple with their Xcode 10.

“Within the past seven days, we have imported nearly 50,000 projects,” Sijbrandij told me in an email. “We’ve scaled up the servers for GitLab.com three times already.”

GitLab also confirmed that it's website is booming with over 13'400 views per minute.

While I don't think GH will lose a night of sleep of losing customers, it'll certainly sting a little and will definitely please investors of GL.

That's not my biggest concern here. I think Microsoft might "peruse" the Hub and then "coincidentally" release a feature without giving compensation to the teams that were working on "similar" feature. 

 

Replace:

"peruse" with "scout"

"coincidentally" with "intentionally"

"similar" with "same"

 

Virtual desktops were a godsend in the Vista and 7 days and it took them until Windows 10 to have the OS do it as a standard (with one of the updates).

MS Azure is wanting dominance, transfering all of Githubs projects to it (couple of million) will boost numbers dramatically. Developers are rather concerned for their private repo's (GH has private areas where only Github Staff and the developer + invited "friends" can see) being exposed to MS grasp.

that's not even that bad in terms of what they get away with, I just like this one becuase literally Linus Torvalds himself helped invalidate it legally because, like normal, they took existing shit and patented it to attempt to troll competitors (in this case, Motorola) and foss solutions out of existence.

The answer is the code that is in there contained.

 

I know most people will start saying it's crazy to think Microsoft could possibly attempt to monetize access to said code or even lift it for closed source projects, no way they'd try something so deeply unethical and such.

 

I am that distrustful of them, I don't think it's undeserved, glad we were able to get past all that nonsense.

no, because i simply do not care about the main point that people have against them because i don't automatically assume they are going to go full evil and ruin everything.

 

Solet's take the "spyware" argument that people keep making. In my job i have full unbridled access to every single one of our customer's details (all 1.5million of them and 90,000 shareholders) names, address, dates of birth, full financial records, credit checks and if i wanted to i could probably build a fairly convincing profile to determine what this person does for a job, what they do in their spare time and track their movements. But do i go through customer records? no, that's morally fucked up and would instantly get me fired. When i need to view a customer record, they are a number on a screen as far as im concerned and as soon as I'm done, i close it and instantly forget about it and move on.

 

Do you think MS has staff that just go through all the data they are collecting for shits and giggles? If they collect as much data as people make them out to, and someone is viewing it for fun and distributing it to friends and family and laughing at what you have on your computer, you know what would happen? they would also be fired and would not be able to get a job in any kind of industry that relying on security of information or privacy if anyone would want to employ someone like that anyway.

 

Its good to want to have privacy, but in the age of the internet, you should always assume you are being tracked in every possible way you can think of. If you don't like that idea, it's time to pull the plug. I've made peace with the fact that my information is out there, it's now up to me to determine what I'M comfortable with having companies know about me, and no one can tell me i'm wrong for accepting it because it's MY information, you can make your own choices about yours but don't force your opinions on anyone else because you're not happy about it

 

I go on facts, not speculation, and so far, most of this thread and almost every other Microsoft has been speculation based on previous actions or inherent bias. and yes i KNOW that MS has done shady shit in the past, but does that mean that everything they do is evil? no. If i made choices on what services i use or products i buy based on the business practices of the company, I would not own anything or use anything.

50k isn't a big amount of projects. There are a total amount of 85 million projects on GitHub so there's no problem there.
