Samsung Galaxy S5 5.25-inch WQHD Display Now In Production

Youbetternot

Well looks like Samsung Galaxy S5 display is in production and it will be a 5.25 inch screen. A bonus to that 5.25 inch screen it is 2560 x 1440 pixels a WQHD display. However there is a not so useful factor and that is 560 ppi.

According to Korean tech news site DDaily, Samsung has commenced the production of 5.25-inch display panels, sporting a jaw-dropping 2560 x 1440 pixels (widescreen quad HD, or WQHD) for the company's next-generation flagship Smartphone, the Galaxy S5. While Samsung won't be the first to the market with a 1440p Smartphone, it will certainly launch the Smartphone with the highest pixel density (our calculations put it around 560 ppi). If Samsung keeps the bezel under check, they could make a phone that is just a tad larger than the LG G2 (5.2-inch display, very compact) despite the increased screen size.

I don't see the point in such a high resolution on a phone. I know we said that when 1920x1080 came around on phones, but it's just taxing the hardware way too much just to win the specs war. Entirely pointless. You can already not see the pixels on 1080p smartphones. RAGES WHYYYYY!?!?!?

That design looks terrible, there needs to be at least a thin bezel on the sides.

i know, what if you drop it on its side, the whole f***ing screen will shatter

All that resolution for what? Watch movie? The speaker aren't even in an optimal location. Play game? Maybe for 30mins max before the battery runs out. Better image view? Are you editing high res picture on a phone?

People said the same thing they're saying now about 1080p when it was rumored to be in smartphones.

The first few had poor battery life. They improved later on. Same thing will happen here. 4000mah batteries are rumored in most devices. It'll be fine.

Take Nokia's 1520 for example. 6" screen, 1080p, 3500ish mah battery and arguably the best battery life of any phone to date.

Aside from that late 90's Nokia. Let's not go there.

I read that the higher 1440p screens help when reading Asian characters. Japanese, Chinese, etc. Apparently they can be a little hard to decipher on lower res screens?

Let's hope Samsung delivers with Design 3.0 next year or a large chunk of their market share is in danger.

They beat Apple at their own game, now Apple will just be laughing at them for spending money on useless features that only hinder the device's performance and increase their cost. My S3 already has a pixel density past the indescernable point, this is just stupid. They should have gone to 1600x900 for 5"+ screens and that's it. gg Samsung

How the hell does that look like a HTC One? I swear, HTC people just keep getting more and more like Apple fanboys.

Anyway that's not the Galaxy S 5 in the picture. It's just another one of those stupid mockups that gets released all the time for upcoming phones. No bezels is a terrible idea anyway, I don't get why mockups always makes phones have no bezels. It makes it almost impossible to hold the phone, and makes them fragile as hell.

I am all for 2560x1440 screens in smartphones, as long as battery life doesn't suffer too much. We can see individual pixels on a 1920x1080 5" screen, so I don't see any reason to stop that that resolution. They probably should have waited for batteries and power consumption of screens to go down though. Then again, with self refreshing displays the average GPU load might not go up that much, and a higher PPI display will not by itself use that much more power (same area that needs to be lit up). If it can still last a day with pretty heavy usage on a single charge then I think this is a good move, and probably the last time we need to increase the resolution on phones.

I read that the higher 1440p screens help when reading Asian characters. Japanese, Chinese, etc. Apparently they can be a little hard to decipher on lower res screens?

440 PPI (what the Galaxy S 4 has) is already more than enough for that. High PPI helps more for those languages than it does for the western languages but I doubt the jump from 1080p to 1440p will be anywhere near as big as from 720p to 1080p. Diminishing return is already hitting us very very hard when it comes to PPI. This upgrade is more about making something that is 98% perfect into something that is 100% perfect.

I really hope Samsung puts effort into calibrating the screen this time. At least make it an option. The movie mode is decent but it should be more than decent.
