SSDs have gotten much better then what they were. I would not be concerned about that

Also, that is a Seagate SAS drive, not SATA.

 

If you want to use a fast drive as a scratch disk to edit your videos, better to use an SSD IMO.

Much better performance overall.

Im curious how much i write to my HDD and destroy daily now, atleast 50gb a day, sometimes 100gb

 

Because of that whole lifetime on how much it can write. 

 

Edit: curious beyond what i keep track of, stuff like caching videos, simulations, proxies, rendering png sequences, etc. All day, every day.

 

Sometimes ill create incremental saves that are about 4gb each. 150tb write life doesnt sound very long now.

Samsung Evo Pro. They are rated for higher endurance than the standard Evo (or other ssds), but you're paying a higher premium for extra read/writes+longer warranty.

 

If you want to go the HDD way, maybe look into Raid or something.

Well the 500GB 860 EVO is rated for 300 TBW...

 

If you get the 1TB one, it is rated for double that, 600 TBW.

The 2TB and 4TB sizes are rated at 1,200 TBW.

 

Samsung 860 Pro is about the same, higher on the large capacity sizes.

Samsung dropped the warranty from 10 years to 5 years on the new 860 Pro.

860 EVO, and 860 Pro both have a 5-year warranty now.

This will happen to any drive, not just SSD's.

 

The whole SSD drive doesn't just die per se.

The individual tiny memory cells can only flip from a 1 / 0  state so many times before they wear out.

When they wear out, the memory cell gets stuck and can't change to the other state.

I can still plug in my old serial harddrives and use them.

Just periodically check how much you've written to the drive. Also make sure you don't rewrite the same cells over and over again (ie: don't fill 90% of the drive with critical files and rewrite the last 10% over and over again).

New question though. Do modern harddrives die as much as people claim they do on newegg? Ive never had one drive fail or get bad sectors, and ive had 15 harddrives in various computers and laptops. Mine range in age from 5-20 years old, with the exception of a new 1tb.

 

Newegg reviews are giving a lot of HDDs 25% doa/failure rates.

HDDs also have that issue. Toshiba's 8TB HDD N300 is rated for 180TB/year read/write, while your SSD gets 600TB/total. Your HDD will just die sooner or later anyway (especially if you abuse it with constant read/write non-stop) so it's pretty much the same?

I must just have been getting extremely lucky over the years with my harddrives, which i get is a big thing with harddrives (luck). Cant wait to use an SSD, been looking at all sorts of benchmarks and prices on here.

It could be luck, but people with broken harddrives are more motivated to leave negative reviews than people with working harddrives to leave positive ones.

I would pick an SSD over an HDD any day of the week. Especially since the first one is way more reliable. Please dont forget to make your back-ups, even though you will have more reliability there is still a chance your drive might fail.

people who've run into issues are more likely to leave negative feedback in general. I'm pretty sure that if we all reviewed everything we bought on amazon and such, you would have a few thousands of good reviews for every negative review...

Above is a preview simulation to make sure its acting right. They grow in size almost exponentially, and i often just delete them when theyre done. Depending on the setting the cache can grow at different speeds, turbulence and other forces slow it down a lot. 

 

The full scale simulation is estimated at 475.7GB and but will probably be 270GB realword.

Its a similar story with other types of simulations, save file instances, the rendered png sequence in multiple layers, all of the video files at 4k 100mbs. 

 

Increasing ram helps, but many things dont let you cache it on the ram and not on the harddrive at all. So the lifetime matters.

 

Edit: This doesnt make an SSD a bad choice for me, just an expensive one. If i want it to last 10 years.

That being said, you should still backup any valuable data across multiple drives.
