Apple fans going into clauses about why Apple doesn't have to fix Linus' Mac Pro

That's not true at all, and it wouldn't be such an issue if they didn't also refuse to sell replacement parts. As for other OEMs that will fix your stuff or at least replace it at repair cost when special parts are required, we have: lenovo, evga, any company selling servers and more. Companies like, say, samsung don't need to offer this service because replacement parts for their stuff are readily available. Apple, on the other hand, is the only company that has access to screens for the imac pro. And to be clear, ANY company that behaves like this deserves to be berated, not just Apple because they're Apple.

 

"Higher quality to begin with" is highly debatable, considering the regular presence of design flaws and blatant omissions in most of their products.

People might still break them accidentally though, and while asking for free repairs on damage you caused would be unreasonable, asking for paid repairs is not.

Doesn't matter, that's not what Apple said and there's no reason to believe this would be the case. The screen is broken, nothing else, and Apple didn't quote them a price that would be higher than buying a new one - they just refused to service them.

I'm sure it has nothing to do with the high prices and inability to run most games...? Poor repair policy matters more to enthusiasts like us than the average user, at least until they get screwed by it.

As a computer repair technician, I can understand this. It's incredibly frustrating when you open up a system and something else is broken, or was incorrectly put back together so I end up breaking it myself. Because I'm a small business, it affects me way more. I end up covering a lot of the cost because a bad review is the death of me.

Since it was completely up to apple to diagnose and fix the problem(s), this makes no sense. Linus came in with a broken computer and asked how much it would cost to get it repaired. The answer was "we will not repair it, period". Even if they opened the computer and it spontaneuosly combusted, Linus would have been willing to pay for the repair so long as it wasn't more expensive than buying a new one - and if the computer was truly unrecoverable (which clearly wasn't the case and which Apple never claimed), Apple lost nothing other than a few minutes of diagnostics and the time it takes to write an e-mail.

I get that, I was just saying I understand how often an amateur repair person has broken something. I'm not justifying their policy. I also pointed out that it affects me a lot more than a company like Apple. They get into controversy all the time and it doesn't hurt them.

They're making products that you can't service. This is an issue for you since it's your livelihood. If the equipment is easy to repair with documentation and parts being readily available, your job would be easier and less likely to be at fault later. These aren't CNC machines that require specific calibrations that only a handful of people are qualified to perform, these phones are for the general public and as such should be reparable by a small-town shop that meets qualifications.

We are talking about a product aimed at professionals. Not consumers. No matter what happened to the iMac, they should at least give the option to repair it, even tho it might cost more than buying a new one.

Sorry guys I'm on Apple side with this one, you knowingly opened the iMac Pro with little to no knowledge or experience and somehow managed to damage 3 components at the same time! How the hell do you manage that!

 

Most likely Apple are refusing to repair because if they do, they have to offer a warranty on the macine again with is utterly stupid in this situation. Not to mention the cost of parts which are most likely allocated to stock already.

 

Now putting this aside Apple know who you are, the serial numbers are quite visible in your 8k red glam footage that a toddler could read it.

 

Lets face it, you bought the iMac pro as a cash cow for video content which Apple hate as is 1 less unit available for consumers to use, you tore it down with no experience anyway and it bit you on the ass.

 

Seriously I have to ask how you guys became a tech site, you can barely do 1 rig builld without blowing something up and Linus and Luke are bordering on teenagers when it comes to modifying cases.

The whole thing is ridiculous and we shouldn't be having this discussion. There is an option to repair it, just not one offered by Apple. You're free to let someone else repair it, even though this may void any warranty.

The only way you will get parts for this unit is from bricked hardware if Apple refuse to repair. Anything else you find in China etc will be an inferior knockoff that looks like the real thing. Apples power supply is exclusive to them, so is the main board and screen.

 

Lst's make no mistake guys, this has nothing to do with Apples reliability, this has to do with the LTT monkeys getting in over their heads yet again working on things they shouldn't touch and cutting cornerss to get videos out.

 

They could have done all the other "testing" first before stripping the machine down and bricking it.

A proper repair is one that is intended to be permanent in the service environment. You don't necessarily need the original part(part number based) if you can get something that meets all the requirements of the original. As an example, Louis mentioned that he ran a wire from one point to another because of a burnt trace. It may not be as elegant as the original(integrated into the PCB), but it performs all the requirements of the customer, and extends the life of the product.

 

This is also something observed in the military world as my workplace repairs military units, and sometimes we'll repair boards that have burnt traces. So instead of just outright replacing the part, we'll repair it and ensure all of the customer requirements are met. Or sometimes the customer will simply run a jumper wire to replace something else. 

 

In the case of an Apple product, if you have a blown cap, if you can get the same cap or another one that meets the specs of the original, all you're doing is removing the previous cap, and installing the new one. Even PCBs can be repaired if the damage isn't great enough.

 

Something else I want to mention is that you have a problem with Linus wanting to make money with his iMac. But that's not even relevant. Linus is still a paying customer, and they're denying service to a paying customer. It doesn't matter how you slice it out....He still paid for it.

It is not about warranty! It is a pro product. Even when the warranty is expired or voided, you should be able to fix it. Apple not giving out the certifications or the parts, doesn't give you an option to repair.
