Throw in some soldering on the controller board to replace some fried parts, slide in a custom BIOS to force the skipping of bad sectors, and get back to me (yes, I've done this...data recovery on highly damaged drives is *frighteningly* expensive)

... then I realised they can swap back and forth onto the 1 drive over and over (providing they did not bend anything like Linus did. ;) ).

How long does it take to do all of that? Days? Weeks?

In the video, it takes a little time to do a swap. It takes up to 10-24 hours to transfer an entire disk (500gb is a few hours, 3tb+ is like a whole day).

 

Soldering work and bios loading might take a hour or so at most...

 

However, finding the right part, bios, etc can take days or weeks. If the drive recovers with perfect geometry, it's 1 day file transfer or a few hours... if the geometry is bad, it can be another day or more rebuilding it. :P

 

"Generally, data recovery will take 2-5 days." From a recovery site.

What Techy Ben said. Basically 8 hour days, 2-5 days if everything goes right, and that's charging by the hour, plus parts.

When things go wrong, start adding zeros to the price tag...(I once did a single file recovery for a client that set her back 40k)

Yeah, if it's only logical/file structure error though, it can take a few seconds (backup from NTFS boot sector backup?).

 

If it's anything worse, then yes, it's the days. :(

What had occurred was a freak set of circumstances.

A direct lightning strike melthing the server, coupled with corrupted backups that no one had checked on in months resulted in said bill.

My fav story about doing backups...or else was a client who was a PHD to-be.

His job was based on completing  said PHD. All his data was on a nasty ancient laptop...with no backups (you see where this is going right?)

He drops the laptop somehow...into a vat of grease (god only knows how that situation occurred)

 

Brings it to me for recovery. The cost to recover that one file was more than he could afford.

Loses job.

 

I know this because months later he delivered a pizza to my door, it was the only job he could get.

 

Ouch.
