"NVIDIA will be launching their next generation GPU architecture in Q3 2018, with a new report from DigiTimes and their sources saying that Turing will "not enter the mass production until the third quarter". NVIDIA is currently expected to unveil the new Turing GPU architecture at GTC 2018, but there could be a few months between its detailing and public roll out."

 

Anyone know what this 'next generation GPU architecture' imples?

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Interesting, seems like they want to clash directly with AMD's vega 7nm refresh if im not mistaken.

I don't think Nvidia sees 7nm Vega as any threat at least on the high end.

They probably view the next potential high end threat from AMD as Navi in early 2019.

Probably mean 2019. But yes. I see Vega as a stop before Navi is gonna take over as a scalable chip with between 2-8 compute clusters or something(speculating). Its going to be nice to see what Vega 7nm is gonna manage as it wasnt a terrible arcitecture, with power being a limiter im seing quite a nice increase in performance. Though its debatable if they were ever gonna have a mid-low range vega card. Because i cant see the 7nm yields are gonna be good in the beginning

7nm Vega is for their ML product line, mostly as it's the "pipe cleaning" product for GloFo's process node.

As for Nvidia's next consumer uArch, GDDR6 supplies won't be available in large enough supplies until mid-year. Considering Nvidia's number of sales, they need a massive supply of GDDR6 to roll out their next generation. Though this should mean the 1080 replacement first, which might mean we won't see the 1060 replacements until H1 2019.

I really wish nvidia would do what they said and stop selling cards to miners... So we, normal users of GPUs, will be able to buy a better one for a normal price. It's abnormal to buy a GPU at the same price or even higher than a used vehicle. (talking 'bout 1080ti that goes for over $1000)

We could see a prosumer variant of the Vega chips kinda like the Titan V

Interesting,sounds like this is going to be their next gaming GPU, not the mining specific card some were hoping for.

Not sure how Nvidia is going to have much control on who is buying, that statement can't be much more than even more PR to satisfy their gaming consumers.

Maybe, but Navi should be coming pretty close on the heels of when it would make sense to roll it out. And it's looking a lot like this recent GPU generation is going to be nearly 3 full years before both sides have their full lineups refreshed.

Haven't some AIBs taken bulk orders from Miners? (Think 1000s of cards in single orders.)

Literally all Nvidia needs to do is make more. I don't know why they are scared because there are millions of gamers that are wanting to buy GPUs outside of mining. So if they made 5 million cards. They would sell out and benefit everyone. Gamers are happy, miners are happy, and Nvidia is making more money

Making more GPU's wouldn't solve it, miners would buy more in bulk, and memory manufacturers are making the chips as fast as they can get the materials out of the ground.

1. When mining hit peak demand, Nvidias next gen is literally right around the corner. Making more production is not free. Its stupid to dump money into an EOL product. 

2. If Nvidia did make more to normalize prices, we already know people are willing to pay $1000+ for even a 1070. If production keeps prices at MSRP, then people will just buy more 1070s, raising demand once again followed by a price hike. 

 

Its an endless expensive cycle and people dont get that.

I wonder if this is a dedicated compute architecture or if this will be the next gen gaming GPU? Sounds like a holiday release or close to CES release.

 

Now if only useless GPU mining will die off.

-nearly all ASIC-resistant cryptos achieve this by relying  on high memory bandwith and low latency. 

-GDDR5/6 controllers are not compatible with with gddr3. Using that memory would require an entirely new chip. Not going to happen. 

-GDDR3's low bandwidth would cripple performance of nearly every workload on a modern gpu. 

-GDDR3 likely isn't being manufactured anymore

We're still not sure this is actually the Consumer line's name. Nvidia is finally having to branch their designs between Compute & Gaming. (They got several generations of making Big GPU, then cutting down for gaming.) This could still be the replacement for the Quadro line and much of their professional space that doesn't need Tensor Cores.

Even with better competition, it wouldn't have changed the timeline much. This is down to Node/Fab issues, and new GDDR coming online.
