They look sneakable, I've changed worse plugs than that!  The Denso SIP/twin tip design lasts 120k miles or more in more demanding engines than a tuned LS.

Hi guys, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but hopefully, someone can help me out here. My parents have a 1998 Volvo S70 T5 manual. The check engine light turned on a few days ago, so I bought a cheap OBDII Bluetooth adapter and found out it was throwing a code for something called the "Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction" (P0410). Does anyone know what could cause this, and how to fix it (and how easy it is/how much it would cost)? It drives fine, if that helps anyone...thanks!

I did some google snooping, it looks like it's an error with a secondary air pump that adds extra O2 to the cats to heat them up and help the cats burn more efficiently. 

 

The good news is that it's purely an emissions thing and has no effect on the drivability of the car.

 

The bad news is that a few forum posts are saying the part is about $400

cheaper to delete it, tune it out and also get more hp (if legal), or actually fix the problem?  :P

Not my car (yet, hoping it'll be my first when I'm old enough) so I can fix it or leave it. I did find what appears to be the correct part for around $150 on eBay, will this work?

On the other hand, if it was my car...I'd still probably fix it because I know nothing about cars so I wouldn't know how to tune it :P 

in theory that would work. but they appear to not be OEM parts. 

The problem sometimes with those ebay parts is they might just not work at all. i'd see if you can find someone who used x product and it worked fine. if you can't find anything, then just play it safe and go with OEM. that way you dont have to buy and install the part twice.

 

and i meant just loading up an off the shelf tune such as: https://www.eurosporttuning.com/ard-ecu-upgrade-orange-tune-stage-1.html (again, might not be legal where you live. any country/state/area that requires emissions testing prob wouldn't pass you if you deleted it)

Likely those parts will work, they're literally just blowers to shove air into the exhaust to push the cats way lean so they heat up faster. Assuming it's a failed air pump and not a failed air valve or relay or any other parts. Since it's just a motor, you can just jump fused power to the wires and it should run or not run, the valve I'm not sure if it's vacuum or electrical operation. If it's vacuum operated then it's fairly simple to check the vacuum supply, output from the vacuum solenoid, and to just apply vacuum to the valve to see if it opens or not.
