can a school(usa) sue for server space use

today my school pulled me and 30 others out of class to tell us that we had 1 week to remove all the games and other items of our z drive (personal school drive) they said if we did not that they would take  legal action can they do this?

considering this is a public school server

It's their storage space so they can wipe it if they feel that you guys have misused it.

 

edit: I'm guessing the legal action is a bluff but they do need to make sure that what's on their network is compliant with their country's copyright laws.

It's a school server. You're not at school to play games, and that's likely against their computer access policy as well. Just get the games off and you're not in trouble. It is their storage, so if they feel you're misusing it of course they can wipe it.

The school owns the resources, therefore, you can only use it on their terms. If they tell you to remove things and you don't, they have every right to remove it.

 

However, can they sue you for it? They can try, but they're not going to get very far.

I'm a senior this year and they were like most of you are seniors so your stuff will be wiped ether way so why do they go through the trouble

Exactly. Just get your stuff off as you'll lose access once you're done with school anyways.

If they received any sort of complaint or notice from their ISP, they're also covering their own butts by reminding you to not misuse their network.

lets reword this question, "i am storing stuff on my neighbors lawn, he told me to get rid of the stuff i have stored because it is his lawn and not mine, can he do that?" yes. its not your server, not your property, and the school is well within its rights to determine what can and cannot be stored on its own property. it doesnt have to make sense, it doesnt have to make you happy, that is simply the nature of property laws within the US. it is what it is man. property is property, it is up to them what happens with something they own. sorry bud.

1. if you are NOT paying for the space, then yes they can sue you.  look up the guy who got sued or got jail time by mcdonalds for milking their free wifi.  2. why would yall install games on the school server? why not your own personal pc? 3. read the user agreement on the public school site. if they dont have one. then you may have found a loophole.
