AMD cancels primitive shaders driver support

Trixanity

The Linux community was pointing out it was brutal to implement, and there's questions if it offers that much benefit. The big one missing is Fast Path, which is all of Vega's IPC improvements. Since it isn't on, Vega is just an OC'd Fiji, in effect.

Like async can lead to AMD having an advantage that they don't have under normal circumstances.....

Which isn't really a problem anyway for NVIDIA with Pascal.

All DirectX 12 and presumably Vulkan did was create multiple command queues for the GPU drivers to work with rather than a single queue. AMD handles this through asynchronous compute (or really a fancy way of saying "we can do context switching faster than the other guy") while NVIDIA handles this through dynamic load balancing.

Voodoo3 owner here. Lots of NFS Hot Pursuit and Quake were played.

In serious news, this makes me glad I didn't buy a Vega. I've upgraded my computers exclusively with AMD cards since 2004ish (1900XT or whatever it was, 4850, 5870s, r9 290, etc), and I'm due for another upgrade. Or, I would be, if AMD had any compelling option with solid driver support any more. Nothing they've put out in years has either been competitive enough(Fury, Vega) or even significantly better than my R9 290 from 2013 to justify throwing $100s of money at. Polaris isn't that much better, the 390 is practically the same, Vega and Fury are better but aren't competitive with cards at their price points, which are more than I want to spend on a GPU anyway. I have never been able to justify upgrading a GPU for a measly 5-10% better FPS, and nothing has come out from AMD since the R9 290 at the $250-350 price point to give me more than that improvement.

Bleh.

It's never that sharp though. Usually cobblestone is pretty soft especially on roads that were used a lot.

So basically they cancelled Vega.
It was one of the biggest parts about Vega, this fancy new shader, but then they just cancel it... Seems like AMD are confirming the theories that Vega was just a test that needed to be put out.

I would imagine some very strong ankles would be required for living there. I'm fairly certain that walkway is violating some sort of safety code, even by rustic/medieval cobblestone standards.

The problem wasn't the existence of Tessellation. It was that Nvidia cranked Tessellation levels to a point where there wasn't any visual improvement but there sure as hell was a lot more compute work needed (that Nvidia cards happened to do more easily). It doesn't show on Heaven, but it does show  in The Witcher 3 and other titles I can't recall right now.

You might be thinking of Crysis 2. It had the infamous concrete barriers, whose flat surfaces were nonetheless tessellated to heck. Also there was a hidden ocean under the entire city, with tessellated waves.

Isn't tesselation more useful for LoD (level of detail) and displacement mapping as opposed to just throwing more triangles everywhere and wasting performance?

No, "NGG Fast Path" is the big part of Vega. And that's still no where to be found. If they ever get it working, Vega should see a huge IPC boost. What they've dropped is driver-level Primitive Shaders, rather than engine-done shaders.  Something has been really wrong with whatever they've been trying to do with Vega's Gaming Driver, which is probably much of why Raja bounced. Hopefully the new leadership can get the core driver aspects fixed in time for Navi.

If it wasn‘t for the Mining craze Vega 56 would be a viable upgrade.

Sadly what you said is true. It kind of sucks that AMD ran out of R&D money (or were forced ro allocate less resources) in 2012. They were innovating hard before... :/

Amd products always feel early access beta when release. Vega might be the worse recently. But they do their best with what they have. I don't have high hopes for their GPU division, don't know if the new chief would do in the future (crypto?), we'll have to wait and see.

If you're trying to sell a nice-looking game, yes. If you're trying to sell GPUs with better tessellation performance than the competition, maybe not.

Considering that not having driver level support would make it impressively hard for a gave dev to utilise this feature, I’d be surprised to see it in more than only a handful of games.

I take it if devs would see this fit for a certain game they would use it. It could be beneficial performance wise. Also more optimization but if it's worth it again, can be used.
