Posted January 15, 2018 With a manual gearbox, a manual park brake (or hand brake as we call it in the land of tea and crumpets) 100%. Electronic park/hand brake is ok with an auto or DSG box. Unless parked on a steep steep hill, but then you just turn the wheels into the curb, when trans is in neutral, let it rest on the curb then put trans in park. Everyone should be using the parking brake. Otherwise, you're literally letting fate decide whether your car gets destroyed (or destroys other property), if something goes wrong. The parking brake adds an extra piece of safety with minimal effort. I use mine literally every time I park my car. Why introduce added risk? On topic: My car has a pull/lever style hand brake in between the front seats. I assume its a mechanical brake, as it makes ratcheting sounds when you pull it up. I voted for that, because I've never used an electronic system, and thus have no opinion on them. Posted January 16, 2018 As someone who lives in Canada and does roadside assistance as his job I have to say... mechanical all the way. I'm sure an electrical parking break is well and good but you're going to hate it when you got frozen relays preventing it from working at -35 degree temperatures.
