Tech Goals for 2018?

dizmo

2018 is here! Hurray! I'm sure we're all looking forward to having enough money to start spending again after Christmas, so what are some of your goals for the coming year?

I also want to see if I can steal any of your ideas :P

Here are some of mine:

  • Set up a mining rig
Very prelim, mostly looking for low cost cards to start
  • Build a new desktop
Bought the case, currently in negotiations for other parts
  • Upgrade my audio set up
Sony A45/RHA T20's have basically won me over. Now I just need to actually buy them
  • Switch out phone/tablet pair
Mi Max 3 and the Blackberry KeyTwo are likely going to be what I get, but we'll see what comes out
  • Will likely contemplate a good set of over ear cans, and decide against it yet again
  • Add 2 step authentication to as much as I can, and organize what service is connected to which email address
  • Invest in 2 or 3 crypto currencies instead of buying lottery tickets

I also bought a rust colored peacoat. Because fuck monotone colors. :P

Water-cool my system and possibly some of the servers.

Move up to a hexa-core or octa-core system if CNL or Ryzen+ are good.

Put my secondary and tertiary OSs on SSDs for faster boot-ups.

And hopefully i can get a new camera, A6300 with 35mm :))

The Nokia 9 looks nice! I wish they'd lose the liquid effect and stick with matte metal, but can't win them all I guess.

Though, if it is 5.5", that means another flagship launched without 18:9, which is rather disappointing.

Have you used the 6000 series? I almost bought an A6000 for product shots, but ended up getting another Samsung (NX30).

I'm on the fence with a hexa core. There are some killer deals on the 5820k/6800k. But I don't think I need the extra cores. Then again, when have I ever gone with what I need over what I want :P

  • Build a PC in a GameCube case that is strong enough to emulate + upscale GameCube games at 4k and 8x SSAA. (Bonus if I can get the disk drive working with it and rip the ISOs without needing to get them elsewhere) Might need to wait until 2019/2020/20xx...
  • Build a Ryzen/Threadripper/any-lake system for VMs and whatnot.
  • Beg the RAM gods for 32GB DDR4 SO-DIMM sticks priced below $150
  • Get an IPS panel and another monitor for the laptop (Just ordered the panel)
  • Nab a larger M.2 SSD if prices lower more (512GB or 1TB)
  • Get a second PCB ruler
  • Possibly a new phone if variable refresh rate becomes more common (Was almost tempted by the Razer Phone)
  • Learn and make use of the .NET framework (Just learned C#, so why not?)
  • Make a UWP app (Impulsively bought a personal developer account since it was $20, so I should at least make it worthwhile)

Ordered IPS panel and added programming goals

What on earth do you need 32GB in SODIMM for?

I hope high refresh rate displays come to more phones but I kind of doubt it. I don't see the big guys adopting it for a couple years yet. They want to get the under glass fingerprint readers down first :P

Were the speakers expensive? If so I'd just get them wrapped in white leather/leatherette/alcantara. Just the housing, leave the front black for the contrast.

I've never really understood putting TVs in front of windows. I mean, I do in some ways. No glare, lack of space, etc. It just seems like such a waste of a window.

getting a 1080p monitor in which i procrastinated in 2017 where i plan to buy in 2016 because i bought a cheap office monitor in 2015

the office monitor is fine as it is, its just that its not 1080p and framerate max at 60Hz. It will end up as a 2nd monitor though

To have alot of leeway for whatever I do. Lets just say that I have a bunch of stuff running at once and enjoy launching the occasional VM. Right now I'm using my desktop for VMs (16GBs, and mostly used up :S) and remote into them from a laptop. As for things running on the laptop, 8GBs easily gets used up :D When my desktop used to be my primary device, 16GBs was chewed through fast, so that's part of why I want to get so much ram.

They're studio monitors, but cheap ones, so only $250 each.

I was thinking of wrapping them or painting them instead, maybe.

I had nowhere else to put my setup because the place I moved to is not that large. The king size bed literally takes up 50% of the room xD

I have a full wall of window over in the living room so that's enough view for me :P

Let's see

Q1

  • Get a phone (got a note 5 with burn in dirt cheap)
  • Build fading royalty, a purple and gold themed hardline build in either a pc-09/011 or FD R6
  • Finish Rising Sun, my first serious case mod build (workstation for mother)
  • Have a desk

Q2/Q3

  • Upgrade to a 2080 ti, 1080 to, 2080 or 2070 if I have both the cash and interest
  • If I get a gpu upgrade I'll probably get a second hand high hz 1440p ultrawide to go with it

Q???

  • If I see a 10c or higher overclickable xeon for a decent price I might nab one.
  • More RAM if the "shortage" ends or I need it really badly

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

I can't even imagine having a monitor under 1080p...I don't think I've ever had one that wasn't 1080p, other than whatever CRT we had as kids, or my first laptop. Actually. My laptop is 900p so that's not entirely true...but it's only 13" :P

Hahaha, yeah I guess VMs would eat up a lot. And here I am chugging along with 4GB of RAM.

Hahaha, I know that struggle! Currently looking at a new bed, but since I'm only staying here for a little over a year I don't wan to spend much. So it's like, do I get a twin (I don't move much) and avoid having company over, a double and have room space, or a queen and have next to no room space. I'm thinking twin will ultimately be the winner.

You could even check and see what a place would charge to wrap them in 3M. Then you can have the gloss effect of paint without the massive prep to do it properly.

My Note5 was still one of my favorite phones. The stylus was immensely useful, great battery life, loved the feeling in hand.

If you want a nice case, you can pick up VRS Design cases quite cheap.

Goal 1: Mine enough crypto to pay for the PC parts I never should have spent the money on to start with

Goal 2: Mine enough to cover the cost of the Vive (won't take much, I got a good deal on that one)

Goal 3: Mine enough to pay for whatever case I end up getting and the parts to do a full custom waterloop

Goal 4: Mine enough to pay for the new laptop I had to buy in November

at current rates this should be viable, I need less then 1,500 to repay the desktop, around 450-500 for the Vive, 1,200 for the new laptop and whatever the loop and case end up costing, I should earn that in a year, but it depends on which way bitcoin goes over the course of the year.

Resist the urge to buy a new case.

Resist the urge to buy a new mouse.

Resist the urge to buy a new mouse pad.

Resist the urge to buy a new keyboard.

Resist the urge to buy an SSD.

Resist the urge to spend money on F2P games.

Resist the urge to buy a new CPU cooler.

So this will be me when I see a good sale on anything

my goals for 2018 is to do a X99 build, upgrade my ryzen build with a r7 1700 or 1700x, do a custom water cooling loop and get myself a new case since my now $25 rosewill nautilus case is very dated with its lack of a basement and lack of radiator mounts(only has 1 240mm rad mount)

EDIT

also i need to get a m.2 NVME SSD

Why mine when you can just buy? Snag some Ripple while you can. I know I plan to.

Unless of course you have super cheap power.

If you're not getting a huge NVME drive, I'd just a big SATA drive. The speed differences aren't huge if it's a gaming rig.

I've always wanted to do a custom loop, but I know I wouldn't take care of it lol
