So it might just be one of the first major builds with it.

The second I saw this card I hoped Jay would put it in Post's build. In the video, they talked about a Louis Vuitton build, which would go PERFECT with this card.

this will be the king of the hill GPU until nVidia pulls a stunt and release a Titan V2

 

the GTX 1180Ti is sure to be at least 80-90% close to the Titan V with a few cores chopped and lesser HBM VRAM like 11GB instead of 12GB all for a price of 1k USD

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

The 1180 Ti will be off a different die. The Titan V let's Nvidia salvage a specific type of die, which has use for certain workloads. And drain some early adopter's coffers.

 

Support for this SKU is going to be an open question, going forward.

Yeah but that doesn't mean tensor cores are some godly thing that improve everything. At their core they really are just machines that do matrix math. More specifically they perform fused multiply add operations with 4x4 FP16 matrices for the multiply ops and 4x4 fp16 or fp32 matrices for the addition part and then return a 4x4 FP32 matrix. While this can be very useful for DL (I'm no DL expert so I'm basing this on others words) these cores are super fixed function and so aren't necessarily good for everything.

 

They may be great for DL but that doesn't mean they're good for other things too.

Hard to tell based on a re-marketed Tesla. I mean, it's not like this is a "Volta version of the 1080ti" the way a 7700K is "the kaby lake version of the 4770K". It's not just the architecture that is different. In fact, it is everything that is different, there is literally nothing left constant here (well, maybe the x16 PCIe connection :P). Hard to infer anything at all.

Nor will Nvidia release 815mm² dies + HBM2 to the mainstream consumer market. Companies don't win by topping some FPS chart, they win by making profits. Profits that are made by sticking a $3000 price tag if not more to this kind of products. A $500 card (which is already ridiculously high end for a gaming GPU) is not profitable enough if it carries such a costly design inside.

How do you get 11GB out of 3 stacks of 4GB HBM? how do they reduce it to 3?

I can see 8GB of HBM2.

Depends, if the Tensor cores can do mining work then the Titan V is equivalent to like 10 1080Ti's. Not that I expect mining to work on those cores.

They'll probably reduce to the ~700 USD like the 1080ti through reducing tensor cores, which don't seem to be beneficial for gaming.

I expect the gain to be a lot more in games... what the fuck is this? 26% better in game? Im pretty sure the jump from titan x maxwell and titan xp was much bigger than that... so is this a failed gaming architecture that they are advertising towards AI because its not very good in games? Idk?

Well to be fair it's not quite big boy for the Titan Xp either. 

 

Titan Xp = GP102

Tesla P100 = GP100

Titan V = GV100

Tesla V100 = GV100

 

Gx100 is the real big boy die.

Tensor core is just a fancy term for hardware 4x4 FP16 matrix FMA. So unless a game actually uses a lot of FP16 matrix math, tensor cores are going to do jack crap for gaming.

Volta is not coming to the mainstream market, Volta is Pascal, the difference are Tensor Cores, those are not going to be in GTX cards, Volta CUDA cores are the same as Pascal CUDA cores, the TITAN V is fast because it has a shit load of those, don't expect a x80 card to come packing as much.

 

The TITAN V was released to fill a tiny gap in the enterprise level, that's it.
