Posted September 8, 2017 not exactly a "backup rig".... repossessed as a media server/htpc and if my main rig dies i'd use that until i find a fix. GPU drivers giving you a hard time? Try this! Posted September 8, 2017 I had a couple PCs I could fall back to but I recently sold most of their parts and bought a laptop. But I guess, that acts as my 'backup rig' as I use it whenever I don't have my PC which is quite often and it can handle quite a few games that I throw at it. Posted September 8, 2017 I'm getting a Xeon build soon, so I'll be keeping my current i5 rig as a backup/show off rig (It's in an Enthoo Evolv, and no way I'm putting a green server mobo in there). Posted September 8, 2017 I don't know if it counts as a "backup", I just have an army of compatible parts (two builds assembled right now, will probably add third one soon). I also revived my old first laptop (former RIP BGA) and tried Lubuntu on it, so now it coexists with its successor (which now has RIP screen - think it's the backlight) and the work laptop. I think I should just forget about computers and flood everything to ebay The thing with the desktop builds is that they aren't meant as backups of each other, I just build the other one(s) because I had spare parts from experimenting with my PC, and I realized I could use them to run parallel stuff for work faster. Still, maybe I should just sell everything / go back in time and not buy anything, and now get a single Threadripper or Epyc build Link to comment https://linustechtips.com/topic/832389-do-you-keep-a-backup-rig/#findComment-10408260 Share on other sites
 Posted September 8, 2017 I threw a pair of 1070s in my old rig (i5-2500, MSI Z77A-GD65 Gaming) and put it in a spare room so I'm not too bothered by the noise of it mining 24/7. If my main rig breaks, I can always put the old one back in the living room. In a pinch I could always use my laptop, and even that has its backup in the shape of an old netbook. Posted September 8, 2017 I have a handful of different machines that I use for different things, but not sure if any of them would count as backup exactly as they all serve a purpose. They could be, for the most part, if needed. Anyone who tells you that you can't do something is unimaginative and probably a coward.
